Cracked Coils

Im wondering if anybody else has seen this? Did a search and did not see anything but when I checked timing over the weekend I went in and also changed plugs and air-filter and when I pulled the coils to get at the plugs they had small cracks in the plastic housing at the top of each coil. They where working fine but with needing the bike everyday I just went on and replaced them. Im wondering if this has anything to do with the amount of foul weather riding the bike sees? Bike has a little over 50 K and is running solid and it was not showing any signs of having any problems. It might be in my mind but does seem smoother now but I think thats my brain after spending 250 for parts.

What year is yours? The first ones did have problems with the coils cracking and leaking (shorting out), although yours is still running fine... How is it when it rains?

Hey invader its a 09. I just got back from a 3 day trip up in PA and it poured the entire time, the bike ran fine but it appears I did the right thing from what your saying. She on a rare occasion would have a little hick-up or dead-spot if you will and that has just started this summer. But like I say it was rare and only happened maybe 4 or 5 times. I wonder if that was the beginning of a failure? Any way its all new now and running fine.

No recall... 2007-2009 Versys original coils # 21171-1286 (Denso 129700-4580) were replaced with # 21171-0028 (Denso 129700-5350) for 2010+ models.

You can upgrade to Mitsubishi coil F6T560. They are the same size, same primary winding, and the seal is made of silicone rubber. With a bit of silicone grease or even high temp, you can make them fit as the seal is a different design and a bit tight, but they fit superbly and prevent corrosion. The rubber seals from your old Denso coils fit onto the Mitsubishi coils, but they will still let water in. The Mitsubishi seal has a lip that holds the rubber in place.

ZX-6RR 03-06, NINJA ZX-6R 05-08: Part # 21171-1282 / Mitsubishi F6T560
ZX10: Mitsubishi F6T549/560
ZG14 08 (Concours): Mitsubishi F6T560

Thanks invader so water is the culprit. Makes sense I’ve done a lot of rain riding. Anyway always good to know why they cracked and I guess even if the replacement coils last as long as these Ill be on a new ride anyway.

Are you replacing your coils? I'll have two extra # 21171-1282 / Mitsubishi F6T560 good coils to spare in about two weeks.

Actually called coil-over-plug, or COP, Kawasaki calls them COIL-ASSY-IGNITION (Ignition coil assembly).

So I guess you got a pair of Kawasaki revised # 21171-0028 (Denso 129700-5350) new coils?

I already got my four # 21171-1282 Mitsubishi F6T560 coils off of a ZX-6R. They look great, and have the Mitsubishi logo and number stamped on. I can sell a pair if anyone ever needs them.
