humming sound from versys after turning it off

So, I rode 30 miles home, pull the bike in the garage and go take my gear off.

come back into the garage to grab a beer out of the fridge and notice a humming sound...I thought maybe one of the ballasts in the overhead light was making noise but I got close and it was coming form the bike.

The keys were out, and in the off position but the kill switch was not on the kill position.

The noise went away after a few seconds, but this has never happened before.

the bike has 20k miles on it and I have recently done a track day
, everything is stock

any ideas?

It was still basking abuzz with the after-glow of the fun of the ride.

That, or the aforementioned air venting from the fuel tank.

With the keys out and the ignition off, the fan would not be running....

Haven't tried it on my Versys yet, but my 2008 Kawasaki Brute Force fan will run after riding it with the key off and out of the bike.

Your idle stepper motor can make a sound after you turn the key off as well. On mine I have noticed it. (I think it tests/resets itself when you cycle the key)

My 2010's fan cuts off with the key in the off position or removed.

If its hot outside, My fuel cap howls sometimes with the pressure. The quick way to tell is to push down on the cap while it is making the noise or open it. If it stops, its the cap.

My previous 250R Ninja's radiator fan will still run when the key is switched off and remove but not for the V or any of the ER6x models.

The V is more prone to have the fan running compared to the 250R Ninja. At very slow traffic speed, the fan will come on once in a while, and are sure to come on when it is idling for more than 2 minutes. I live in the tropics so my fan works harder. I maybe wrong but I think the fan has 2 speeds as I can feel a little vibes and hear the fan whirring and after a while being stuck in traffic, the full blast will come on.

Ideally the fan should run after switch off but my 2009 doesn't. Need to check the fan and maybe reset it so that its running with key out-if it's hot.

Thanks for highlighting .

Well i've only heard the fan run one time after a 700 mile trip. Parked it in the garage and while i was sitting in the house heard a strange noise and it was the fan. Glad i got to hear it i was worried it didn't work because it never came on.

fuel tank noises

I know my black versys will make weird noises after the bike sits in the sun for a bit after moving it out from the garage in the summer. I found it was pressure build up in the fuel tank making the noise.

My 2010 Versys cuts the power to the fan when the key is turned off. Maybe other year models are wired always hot on the fan motor instead of switched??

Must be a Kawasaki thing: my EX500's fan wasn't wired through the ignition switch, but 1999 and earlier models were. This thread just reminded me of the similar one on EX500.com.

And I can second that the '09 Versys fan runs after switch off.

Interesting! Guess there is a wiring change when they changed the model in 10.

I came into the garage after a big recent ride and found my V reclining in a bathrobe smoking a cigarette.

chortle, chortle,

Hence we all see the logic of electrically driven fans on water-cooled engines (as apposed to the old 'american-style' thermo-clutch driven fans...do any american cars still use these?? I think not).
A engine will always continue to heat-up before cooling down, after shut down.
thermostatically controlled electric fans help to draw that heat away even at a stand still.
Better for the engine...yes indeed...and no drag on the engine when operating means better fuel economy.
Heck, my 1971 BMW 2002 had electric fans...folk were always chasing me down in parking lots to tell me my car was still running LOL
