Digital Gear Indicator

Just recieved my Cal-Sportbike Digital Gear Indicator for my '09 Versys. It's supposed to be dirt-simple to install. Just plug it into the ECU Diagnostic terminal under the seat. Maybe I'm a dumb-ass, but I just can't get it to fit. The instructions aren't real clear, so I'm at a loss. Can anybody offer some advice. Much appreciated.

plug?

I think there is a plug/cover in it (need to remove it 1st)
....as well as the plug is "keyed"

I thought of that, but couldn't get it to budge. is this something the dealer can "un-key", or is it something I can do? I was hesitant to force anything-maybe being too careful??

cover

I just dug my plug (cap) out of a box....(cap has 4 yellow plugs in it).
Look at the side of the plug that has two ribs... that is a locking tab.
Squeeze the locking tab on the bike side (pull off cap)

Digital Gear Indicator Solved

Hooray ! I went out to the garage after reading your tip, and it worked. Just had to squeeze the right spot, and off it came. The indicator unit plugged in beautifully. I owe you a nice, cold beer. Thanks again.

Where did you mount your indicator?

Would love to see a pic of your installation.

Thumbs up

Nice simple location for mounting the gear indicator!

I have a "Human Interface Integrated Gear Counter". Works just fine. Free too.

Don't want to rattle the cage, but I don't get the usefulness of a gear indicator

Maybe someone can enlight me, with good argument

I cannot find a way that this device would be needed

If you need to accelarate, and the power is not their, then you downshift
If you engine want to get out of the frame because it's overreving, you upshift ...
So, now it's up to you, who uses that farkle, to try to convince me

How "old school" to rely on your brain instead of expensive and complicated electronics! You won't have anything to malfunction and have costly repairs!
What will you do with all of the money you save?

Speaking for myself. A lot of add ons are done just because we can. Have you added anything to your scoot? Different tires? Seat? Lights? Anything?

If so why?

It was shipped from the factory in a perfectly acceptable condition. Why change it?

Because we can!

Just an idea I did this with my gear indicator on my Versys... just get a piece of light sheetmetal (or plastic is okay too) material and make a cover that sticks over the unit some 20mm over the top and angles down the sides (bit like a baseball cap tip) and you won't get any reflection from the unit on your screen at night and also stops the sun glare from trying to view it with the bright glare....
