Diagnostic help needed

Morning all,

08 Versys with 12K miles, had developed what i believe to be a miss, a severe one. Bike had been idle of several weeks, then presses into action due to broken timing belt on my car (

Symptoms are lack of power, herky-jerky, backfiring. usually after a couple of miles of riding - interestingly if i turn bike off and restart, I'm good for another while?

Bought some used coils off of ebay, swapped out and problem still evident (I appreciate that used coils could be a problem).

Checked spark plugs (less than 2k miles old) when changing coils and they looked good.

Any ideas of where to check, no competent motorcyle mechanics on island!

Check you electrical connections. Loose or corroded connections create all sorts of gremlins like this.
Especially check the grounding bolt ontop of the gearbox (under the airbox)
Also check the battery connections.
Make sure the connectors are clean and bright - not dusty with white crust. clean with some hot water and scotchbrite.

One other thing to check is the main electrical cable. It can fray from wear and vibration.
Remove the airbox and look at the right side top frame rail just in front of the seat. the cable can rub against the frame here.

I would check the coils again. The first gen coils are prone to cracking. This causes your types of symptoms. Maybe you could try a set of 2nd gen coils.

Not sure about the Versys but the Vulcan 1500 would act that way when the throttle bodies started to get dirty............you might clean them.

Many thanks guys,

Hope to get a chance to look into it again over the weekend,

I did check the original coils before ordering the newer (used) versions - old coils were not cracked.

I'd also check:

- air filter for dirtiness
- throttle bodies for dirt, clean as needed (noted above)
- electrical ground(s)
- bad gas, drain or try some gas drier - you could have water in the tank(!)
- wires frayed or rubbed through
