Alternator Strator

Okay, so I really don't know much about this stuff so bare with me. Let's suppose that you go all out on heated gear, heated grips, gps, lights, etc. With the current stock setup I don't believe that the bike would handle it. Has anyone looked into or performed some type of modification or upgrade that would allow such a large electrical draw?

Good Morning,

Yeah I searched through the forums and read what people had posted, though couldn't find what I was looking for. I'm wondering this because I know that police bikes are upgraded or have a higher electrical draw than typical bikes. I also know that people search for low draw electrical components to put on a bike, but what if you just upgraded the electircal output and then put on whatever electrical gadgets you wished. I would think this doesn't apply solely to the Versys, but to every bike out there. Maybe I'm just being foolish in thinking this?

No, Bill. I don't think it is foolish.

Thomas Edison said:

"If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward".

"Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration".

Guess it would be possible but question is will it be worth the effort.

It's a never ending vicious cycle. No matter how large a capacity a bike has, there will always be someone that has more gadgets than it can handle. A lot of my friends ride long distance rallies, including the IBR. Some of those cockpits would not be out of place in a medium sized plane... And yes, despite having bikes with 700W capacities, they still need to modify the alternator's output.

The total output on the Versys is about 336W (IIRC). You can have the coils rewound to produce a higher output or you can find an alternative aftermarket stator that would do effectively the same. I haven't run into anybody making a higher output stator, but I am sure that a company like electrosport can make one for you.

FWIW, I run a heated liner and gloves in winter without a problem. The only times I have seen the output struggle to keep up were idling with all the electric gear on max output (~115W).
