2015 Top Case Advice

I need to get a top case for my 2015 650, but having trouble deciding which one. This bike is mainly a commuter, carrying my wife as a pillion 3 days a week, and just me the other 2. This would need to fit at least one helmet, but perhaps 2 would be handy.

I'm tossing up between a typical curvy vs more squarish dual-sport designs.

Quick and easy to remove would be good. Do any designs require non-reversible modifications to the bike?

Down the track, I might consider panniers, so they would need to match both in style and function.

Finally, any suggestions where to source these from Australia?

MAKE SURE YOU GET THE RIGHT PLATE FOR YOUR LUGGAGE. M5M/M7M FITS MONOKEY M5/M7 FITS MONOLOCK.
I bought most of my luggage from motostorm with the exception of the top box which I got off ebay. All up it was around half the price of the Kawasaki stuff, of course that was when the exchange rate was favorable.

I have the factory 47 liter case. My girl LOVES the additional backrest. No crazy modifications necessary. Holds my modular helmet and her street helmet at the same time. It is color matched to the bike and key matched to the ignition key as well. I really can't complain about my case at all.

IIRC, the OEM is a Givi. My only beef was its price and that may vary from country to country. Here, it was a couple hundred more than the Shad case I bought and the Shad was bigger and came with a luggage rack.

As to the single key thing, I thought that would be preferable at first too, but having a separate key on a ring with a lock for my helmets, a disc lock, and a house key means not only don't those keys rattle around and scratch things up, but I can get in my top box without having to pull the key from the ignition...or gas cap as the case may be.

One could do the same with their extra bike key too, but I prefer to keep that one at home. It wouldn't be too much to replace here in the states, but I understand that in other countries, they come with immobilizers, which make replacement considerably costlier. I can get a top box key made at the local hardware store for under a buck.

Do mounting plates require drilling/modifying the bike? Or more to the point, are there any that don't?

Not clear who you were asking, but Shad provides their own that bolt right on.

A seahorse 720 with locks (direct) is $85, pretty roomy and relatively jet stream. Another member bought a 2014 with all 3 seahorse bags, or similar brand, and his bike looks the best equipped of all nice bikes here, imo. There are several here that have all 3 Seahorse bags, but I don't know about the saddle bag racks for the panniers (and I'm pretty happy with the top box only - fixed!)

Of course the rear AL SW rack was at least $185, and I think most pannier racks will work: but I'd be thinking AL and mounted as close to the bike for aerodynamics.

The Givi's do have good engineers, but they are still balloons. I'd never carry that much crap if I'm motorcycling: but everyone is different though.

Seahorse is cheap, sleek, waterproof sealed, and efficient storage. What more do you want?



And for groceries, I have a 40" x 14" DIA US Army Olive Drab duffel bag that carries up to 140 lbs (water gallons, juice, and 8-10 bags of groceries); and when on my back, rests on my back seat like a passenger It doesn't get any better.

Givi make two lines. The Mono Lock which is harder, more rigid plastic with rubber gaskets on the opening and the slightly cheaper Mono Key line which is made of ABS plastic. Both are excellent and well designed and made. The Mono Lock cases look a little more finished up close but the difference is not drastic. I really like my B33 Monolock case. It seems to be just the right size for the Versys and does not give it that top heavy look you get with some cases. It holds my large bell helmet and gloves with ease or three grocery bags if you cram them in.

I used the Givi top case mount however SW-Motech make a lighter weight one that is slightly more pricey. There is also a site member that makes a custom one. The SW-Motech one is lighter as it removes the need for the heavy grab handles and reduces top weight. I believe the SW-Motech mount is also compatible with side case mounts which the Givi mount is not. To tell the truth, I'm happy with just a top case and side soft bags (Cortech) for the occasional camping trip. I don't think you really need side cases on this bike and the soft side bags are comparatively cheap ($150) and don't require mounts.

I know the Givi and factory bags are easy bolt on units. Mine took about less than an hour to assemble and install. Maybe two hours with incremental celebratory beers. You could put it back to factory setup in 15 minutes easy.

I would think that almost all units are bolt on nowadays. If I had to do it again, I would honestly probably go with the shad 48 liter case.

The V47NNT is identical to the OEM case. It's very nice.

If everything you ordered is in stock it should be pretty quick.

If not...I just had to cancel an order with Motostorm. A friend told me about them a few months ago. I checked it out and the prices were fantastic so I ordered a few things. A week passed and I hadn't received any communication or my stuff. I checked in and was told they were waiting on one item from a supplier and it would ship within 2-3 days. Then I waited some more. And some more. I got in touch again and got the same response. Nothing that I'd ordered was crucial so it wasn't hurting me to wait but it was frustrating. A few days ago I decided enough was enough and cancelled it. Not a happy camper but hopefully my experience was a fluke.

Mine took 1 week from Italy to country NSW. I wouldn't recommend them otherwise 5 star service

My top case just arrived. It seems to be locked, with no key in sight. There's something inside, probably the mount/rack , which I can't get to! Any idea if there's a trick to opening the case (in case it isn't locked)?

This isn't looking good...

Look in your paperwork plastic bag and inside your box. When my Seahorse came, I couldn't find my tiny key and called them asking for another one. It fell out inside my box the next day, before they ever responded. If your key is like mine, it's the tiniest key I ever saw

Without a key though, it's a community free-for-all box

Here's the rub - the corner of the box was split open. Even the delivery guy commented on it. There was no paperwork or anything other than packing material. I imagine any key or other stuff has fallen out

Trying to remember it's been 2 years. I think mine was unlocked with the key being taped inside, or that might have been the panniers. I'll have a look at the top box when my son gets home tonight it may refresh my memory.

**** saw this after I posted my above comment. Call the delivery company and see if they found it. Otherwise you may have to go to a locksmith. Motostorm was very helpfull with me perhaps they could get another key.

Damn it!! Accidentally ordered the wrong plate Whilst it's my fault, you'd hope that Motostorm would have picked up on it.

I got the M5M instead of the M5. Before I go about replacing it, can anyone explain the difference between the M5 and M7 plates? The Givi site is bloody useless IMHO.
