What does KLE stand for ?

I was humoring myself this morning by learning the strange model numbering for Harleys but I can't seem to find out what the model numbering convention is for Kawasaki.

Anybody know or have a link ? Or does it really not mean anything ?

I am just guessing but how about Kawasaki Limited Edition? I think I bought the last 2010 Versys in Texas back in April so it makes sense to me.

At Kawasaki, the Vulcan series features bikes from 500- to 2000-cc, with a Nomad tourer and Mean Streak, Drifter and Classic cruisers. The Ninja sportbike name survives, still with a ZX prefix, which dates to the Z1 of 1973. ZZs are sport touring. KLR means dual-sport, KLX is offroad and KX is bare-bones motocross.

I hate to break it to you guys but the Versys is not the first KLE bike made by Kawasaki.

I give you the KLE 500.

For those of you who didn't know about the KLE 500, here is a page with the specs and a quick description of it.

The first KL 250 came out in 1977, then the KLR 250 and KLR 600 from 1984 to 1986. KLR 650 from 1987 up, and the KLX 650R 1993-1997... Then came the KLE 500 'Enduro' from 1991-2007, which was followed by the KLE 650 (Versys: Ver/satile Sys/tem).

From 1961 to 1975, 650 four stroke twins were the W series...

Wow, thanks for the history updates! I think the Kawasaki newbies like me and those also like me that have been on hiatus from motorcycles for a while appreciate the information. Thanks Invader and BrotherCannon. That KLE 500 is cool.
