What do you call it?

Hardest question I am asked by a lot of people is what kind of bike is it? Is it a crotch rocket, orrrrr... I usually respond I'm not sure its a Versys, it's a little of everything. The question is begged though what do you consider the versys? Too few cylinders, and the wrong setup to be a "crotch rocket", too small to be a touring bike, tires are too small to be an enduro, too tall, nimble, and upright to be a cruiser. Is it just a Versys?

I call it a sportbike, because that's how I use it. It's an adventure bike, because I've had adventures on it. I've also cruised with it. I've ridden miles of gravel and dirt roads and some fire trails, and it's endured that...

Labels are limiting.

If they don't know, it doesn't matter. However, I regularly classify mine as sport touring. Unless the bags are off, then its a standard sport bike. Why? Because the guys (and gals) riding around on the ninja 650's can't run from me and when i'm feeling it, some of them can't keep up.

It depends on how the owner uses it.

2008 Versys 650

Been riding 8 or 9 years, and have owned 8 or 9 bikes; its an addiction I can't quit...

I have a DRZ400SM. When friends see me on the versys I explain it is the wider smoother version of my supermoto.

it's a standard. but for people asking that question, the reply "it's just a bike" seems to be sufficient.

In a world full of people, only some want to ride. Isn't that crazy?

Forty years ago we would have called it a "UJM" - Universal Japanese Motorcycle.

That is, it does everything.
