Selling the old bike: Best method?

I'm buying a new bike soon and plan to sell my old bike. Its been over ten years since I sold a motorcycle. The last time I used classifieds in the local paper (sold it way too cheap, but that is a different story). Today, the classified section is nearly empty. Very few ads. That probably reflects low subscription numbers for newspapers in general.

My wife doesn't see us as a two bike household. That means the 2004 KLR 650 has to go. So what's the alternative? Craig's List? What are you guys using?

I bought my TDM 850 on Craigslist and sold it on Advrider forum. I sold a repaired GSXR 750 on Cycle Trader. Cycle Trader was expensive, the other two were free.

I bought my FJR off of Cycle Trader. Put my Versys on Craigslist and Cycle Trader. It sold off of Craigslist.

After over 50 bikes, I've found the best to be Craigslist, Cycletrader, and the newspaper - in that order. Ebay a distant forth.

I've had great luck on Craigslist. Here are a couple of tips.

1) Clean bike up real well
2) Take lots of HIGH QUALITY pics. Good lighting. Clean/clear backround. Close-ups.
3) List all mods and upgrades
4) List maintenance history
5) If necessary, list 'disclosures' (issues with bike)
6) Let them know 'about' where you live and how easy it is to get there
7) Don't sound like a jerk in your ad. Don't whine about serious buyers only or no low ballers or no test rides. Negativity doesn't sell. Just write "asking xxx" and leave it at that. You want to sound like a guy people can talk to and deal with. Invite them to e-mail you with questions and let them know you are glad to respond.
8) Clean and organize your garage when people come to see your bike. It shows you are someone who takes care of things.
9) Don't try to squeeze every last nickel out of the sale. Take a reasonable offer and move on.

Thoughtful Ad - Good Pics.

I've bought and sold many bikes on Craigslist also, it's great. But in addition to the above comments, don't get frustrated or even respond to low ballers.

People will often respond with: "I like bike. will you take $1500? pick up today" When you're asking $4k... Just ignore them or reply "thanks but that's too low"

As with any sale use caution and common sense; figure out what payment you're willing to accept. Cash is king generally

2008 Versys 650

Been riding 8 or 9 years, and have owned 8 or 9 bikes; its an addiction I can't quit...

Agree with "don't get frustrated". Why would you? It's 15 seconds of your life.

Disagree with not responding. Respond to everybody. Polite and friendly. Thank them for their offer and apologize for not accepting it. You never know.

Remember Al Pacino in The Godfather .... It's business, not personal.

KLR forums, craigslist. I ask for cash in hand for a test ride. Need to know they are serious and not just out for joy rides.

Great suggestion. Gator had some great ones too, but I was wondering how people handled this part.

I can't help but think of this when I think of offering a test ride.

That site always has nice bikes for sale. I've been sending a buddy of mine in Ft.Worth bikes for sale from that site. He finally pulled the trigger on a FZ-1 last saturday.
