World's FASTEST manned-flight...!

Here's a link to the FASTEST flight ever (that we KNOW about...) which happened on 02 October 47 years ago in an X-15.

It takes awhile, but it AND all the comments after, some by the designers or others attached to the X-15 program, are REALLY worth reading.

The pilot was a "man-among-men"...!

I have a signed picture of Joe Walker - another X-15 pilot - who died 20 days before I was born in a tragic accident. Joe gave that picture to my dad at and AIAA meeting in Albuquerque.

It was an amazing period of time. It took such a short amount of time to go from Orville's flight to Neil's small step. The glamorous part of aviation development is behind us.

I have seen that X-15 along with many other amazing one of a kind airplanes at WPAFB. If you ever get the chance to get the Dayton Ohio you own it to yourself go spend (At least a day) at the Air Force Museum.

OH Yeah, just down the road is the shop of a couple of bicycle mechanics who also built a few airplanes, The Wrights Brothers.

Or was that look THEN leap?

I miss a good sonic boom every now in then.
Not really related but I've got a picture of my uncle standing with Igor Sikorsky. He worked on his prototype helicopter.
He also has a picture of Howard Hughes by himself.

There's a full sized model of an X-15 hanging in one of the buildings at the Pima Air and Space Museum just across from the Davis-Monthan Air Base near Tucson. REALLY worth visiting if/ when you're in the area!
