Another weird place to visit
The site of the Hindenburg disaster in 1937. It is located on the Lakehurst Naval Air Station across from McGuire AFB/Ft. Dix in New Jersey. There is a small memorial at the site made from anchor chain with links more than a foot long in the shape of the gondola. Nearby is Hangar 1, the giant hangar that was supposed to house the Hindenburg. Mere mortals can visit the site by contacting the Hindenburg historical society. You have to submit your name a couple of weeks in advance to get cleared because it as an active military installation. No foreign nationals. You can get right on with a military I.D. card.
Oh yeah, the last surviving crew member died a few days ago. He was a 14 year old cabin boy at the time of the disaster. One of the passengers who was 8 at the time is still alive.
