up Mt Lemmon, DIRT SIDE!

Hi all,

Just got back from a 200 miler, about 30 to 40 of which was dirt, rocks and baseball sized 'rollers', climbing from about 4300' ASL at Oracle, AZ (near where the "Biosphere2" was/ is) to 8,000' at the end of the dirt near Mt Lemmon's summit, just east of Tucson.

I installed my new rear RoadSmart yesterday (at 10,008 miles on the original) with the stocker still on my front. Probably rode half the dirt standing on the 'pegs, mostly working 2nd and 3rd gears (and wearing my MX boots), but some occasional 1st on switchbacks.

The "V" worked like a dream, easy to control standing, with NO ...OH MY GAWD! ... moments. Throttle control was VG except sometimes in 1st when it became jerky, and the brakes were fine, usually the rear of course. (I'm starting to imagine the "V" on some true DS tires like those Shinko 705's some have tried.)

Nice! Let me know when you wanna do it again! I'm so down.
From the looks of it those roads seem easier to handle than 4Peaks... not that it was excessively hard, but some DS tires sure would have been nice on the sand and rock.
Cool pics too, the V looks great when it's dirty.

Nice ride!

It's beautiful up Mount Lemmon. What was the temperature difference from the bottom to the top?

Can't say for SURE, but standard 'lapse-rate' is 2C/1,000 ft - roughly down 8C (13F) from the start. I will say that it was noticeably cooler at the top once I relaxed enough to let the heat out of my gear...! The ride down the mountain on the pavement was quite a bit cooler at the higher elevations as I wasn't working QUITE as hard as riding UP!!!

And Amir - sorry I didn't phone you. PM me w/ your #.

BTW, there's a gate about half-way on the dirt (as well as the gate at the top) with a sign saying access is not allowed (gate closed) from 15 Dec to 01 Mar.
Bet there's snow from last night...!
