Similar bikes to Versys

I have considered buying a Versys for my next bike. I have been on a test ride and loved it. But before making the decision, I would like to know about similar bikes from other manufacturers.

What other bikes did you contemplate before buying the Versys?

Add Buell Ulysses to the list.

By all means you should look at these bikes as well, but don't expect to find anything 'similar' to the Versys in the same way that a CBR is similar to a GSXR, or a Shadow is similar to a Vulcan.

They're almost all about 50 pounds heavier with the exception of the F800.
They're almost all going to compare unfavorably to the Versys in reliability and ease of maintainance, except probably the V-Strom 650.
Also, they're all without exception more expensive than the Versys.

Also, in true motorcycling wisdom, I dont have any of those bikes so they must be #$%&!

Aprila Shiver...

Just an FYI, the International Motorcycle Show is coming to most major cities in November/ December and its a good place to take a test ride (about a 30 minute ride )...Not all the bikes are available, but a lot of them are. Triumph, Harley, Buell and BMW you can test ride anytime at your local dealer...

If I new what I was doing, I wouldn't still be working

Suzuki GSR on the same price range, Triumph Tiger 1050 or KTM 990 ADV if I decided to get a loan. The V was the best choice after all.

Started saving, looking in February 2008. Back and forth, Wee-Strom (couldn't get past the Suzuki thing, but seemed a potential if I could get my hands on one.), 1200GS (seemed too heavy and much too $$$), 650GS (couldn't bond with it, still more $$$), then the real 800GS came out, agonized..............saw a Versys (said I would never own a RED bike), tried one out and decided that I could buy all the extra's I needed with the money I saved............bought my RED Versys last October.

Now 11 months and 9,597 miles later (almost daily ride), my only regret is that I didn't buy one sooner.

PS: For the tire discussions, that is on the stock Dunlop's too.

I'm looking as well. The three I'm looking at.
The BMW F800 is probably out. Too much money and dealer is far far away from me. I fell in love but I'm not going to spring for a BMW. That's what happened when I bought my Honda ST1300. Rode and fell in love with a BMW R12 but bought a Honda. LOL.
The Suzuki V-Strom 650 is a real possibility. I think the 1000 is more than I need.
The Kawasaki Versys is on top of the list right now. Dealer is close and not 1/2 bad as far as motorcycle dealers go. I do my own service for the most part but I want back-up! Suzuki/ Honda service in town leaves something to be desired.
I've not rode any of theses bikes.
I would buy 2nd hand. More V-Strom's around 2nd hand.

Just to narrow down your question a bit more, do you mean bike specific related or price related?

Agree. Reading reviews I figured the Versys was the bike for me but I could never warm up to it in person. It felt too upright for me not to mention the "interesting" front end. The FZ6 looks cool, IMO, has more power, an aluminum frame, 4 piston monobloc front brakes and the overall build quality seems higher. Too bad Yamaha US is dropping it for 2010.

I found my used 2008 Versys by using www.searchtempest.com - it allows you to search all Craigslist within a selected mile radius. I managed to find one about 130 miles away

Ninja 650r...loved it, but couldn't get past the bland looks.
SV650...couldn't ever find one of the darn things!
Wee Strom...sat on one and couldn't bond with it.
BMW's...shyeah, people can actually afford these things?!
Aprilia Shiver...gorgeous freaking bike, still a bit high on price though.

I fell hard for the Versys the very first time I saw one on the local dealership's showroom floor last year. Very unique, rock solid frame and suspension, and great reliable parallel twin. I started looking for this rare bike, low and behold, one went up for sale a block from my house! And the seller had the SAME NAME as me! Talk about fate!

Took it for a test drive and knew within 20 seconds that I was going to buy this bike.

Ducati Multistrada 620. Very, very close to the Versys. You should check them out as they are now affordable on the used market.

Yeah, that’s a statistic sample size of 1, category “anecdotal evidence”, but there it is.

If you are going for econo and good bang for your buck, the V. I would steer clear of any euro bike if $ is an issue, they are higher maintenance and parts are $.
