Pop Starting question

Can new bikes (our bike), that have FI and therefore a computer, be pop started if there is no juice to the CPU before ignition? I know FI motocross bikes require 2 kicks to start with the first kick charging a capacitor to power the CPU.

MX bikes don't have batteries.

I believe someone mentioned in a thread earlier that they push-started their bike when they drained their battery too low to use the starter, although it had enough juice for the fuel pump.

The reason I mentioned the capacitor in the FI MX bike is precisely because they do not have batteries.

It does start fine by bump-starting in 2nd gear. With the ignition on, fuel pump is activated and the CPU is live.

Would that still work if the battery was completely dead? I know that if you have enough juice to run the FI, you can do it.

Steve

I bought a motorcycle because my wife said that I couldn't! Now I have two and she still says I can't have another one!

It will still start if the battery is just a bit too weak to operate the electric starter, as long as the alternator is still functional. It may be harder with a completely dead battery, and it won't start if the battery has an internal short.

Can someone try a pop start with the battery removed?

Don't try starting it without the battery if you don't want to burn out your bulbs, fuses, and maybe more.
