dunlop q3-rocky mtn atv

I just ordered a new front tire and was charged tax. my inquiry revealed there is a warehouse and showroom just a few miles from me in Winchester ky. I had a $25 gift card that is a free gift when you buy a magazine sub. for Dirt Wheels which got the price down to about $82 for a 120-70-17 Dunlop q3. anyway , I have an extra front and rear wheel now, the rear came with a fairly new Dunlop sportmax d221 and id like to get some use out of it and im hoping the q3 will run with it and not cause problems from the tires not being the same. I was unable to locate a match for the rear tire. I don't have any knowledge of how critical that is or if it even matters. now I can keep my Pirelli mt60's mounted, as they are fairly new. but I want to try out a street tread. id rather not go flying off the side of a mountain though, from mismatched tires------with the money I saved from not buying a new q3 rear tire in my pocket-----my question being---is that likely to happen?

I wouldn't run the 221 even tho it's free. A really awful tire. If you want to enjoy the V with street tread get a matching Q3 for the rear. Or even a Sport Tour rear like the Road Smart. I have been running Bridgestone S20 front and 023 rear.

probably safe to say they are stretching the truth more than a little in this article then -----

I doubt you would ever get a better deal than that----got my new tire already. I just ordered it sunday. I will probably go on and get a new one for the back as well.---not sure if the q3 is the right choice or not. but I will find out when the snow melts------

Used these for several sets before I 'went' Tourance.

HIGHLY recommend the ContiMotions!

Just my inexpert opinion, so don't sue me if you do fly off a mountain. I have been running a Q2 front and a RoadSmart rear on my Versys, for similar reasons of wanting to get the most out of tires on hand. I think the RoadSmart is better than the 221, however, so the difference between front and rear on my mismatched setup may be less than the difference on your mismatched setup.

My question is this: How hard are you riding? Would I go to a track day with mismatched tires and push my personal performance envelope? No way. Do I (and have I) ridden many, many miles on the street, at a sane street pace, at the kind of pace a Versys is made for, with mismatched tires on more than one motorcycle without flying off a mountain? Yes. As long as they're both a similar class of radials (i.e., both street tread, not mixing dual-sport and street), I do that and don't fear for my life. YMMV.

Whitehorse Press is going out of business so it's time for a final sale. Signed copies of my book are now $10 with free shipping in the U.S. while they last.

hey, thanks for the input. I went ahead and ordered the q3 rear tire this morning, but I want to try out the 221 on the back for awhile till I get around to mounting the new one.---------
