Freeway debris

Had a somewhat close call yesterday on the 134 freeway heading
east toward Pasadena just east of the 5 interchange. I was in the
carpool lane and 3 lanes over and about 30 feet up I see a car
go over a 2 foot by 4 foot piece of sheet metal. It flew up
behind the car about 4 feet in the air and came straight toward me.

Ended up skidding across my lane within inches of my front tire.

I thought I was going to have to ride over it, there was no way I
was going to avoid it had it decided that it wanted to intersect my
path.

Had I been half a second sooner to that point that's what would have
happened. Had I been half a second sooner and 3 lanes over, I would
taken it in the chest. Although had I been three lanes over I would have
likely been another 50 feet back or so as I never cruise at 70mph close to the
back of another vehicle.

Even scanning up the freeway for debris you can't see everything.

Good for you for not tailgating and for keeping your distance from other vehicles.
Something as simple as keeping a safety margin may have saved your life yesterday. I'm truly amazed at the number of people (both riders and drivers) who just don't get that. It falls under the catigory of "be ready for the unexpected". A really good rider isn't the one who can perform evasive maneuvers, a really good rider is the one who doesn't have to perform evasive maneuvers.

Good job.

Well done!

I have had many of those moments and thought, glad I gave my teeth that extra two strokes with the bush this morning!

Perfect timing!
