Lake MI loop

Hi all,

Just got back from a 3 day 1000 mile loop around lake MI starting in and returning too Petoskey MI. It was a fantastic trip, me on my '08 V and a friend on on '09 Wee Strom 650 ABS. No bike problems and no rain at all. Parts of the circle tour route were woth following some were not. All in all it's a trip I would recommend. As always there are a few things I would avoid and other's I would add in if I do it again.

A group of guys were talking about making this trip soon. However, they are changing their minds to go to Mississippi instead. I won't go there, but I'd love to make this trip. It sounds like a blast. Give us more details and any pics? Give us the highlights, lowlights, the whole nine yards. I think this sounds like an awesome trip, and if the other guys go south, I was thinking of making this trip solo if I have too.

I would go up into door county (sp?) Wis. if I did it again I hear it is great up there. I would go around Chicago, but thats mainly my fault as there was a big festival and I did not check ahead of time, traffic was terrible. Make sure you take the entire lake shore run from a bit north of Luddington and finsihing the entie M22 loop, it's one of the best parts of the trip. Lake Shore Dr in Milwakee was cool too. For the most part get a good map set and gps and stay off the main freeways as much as time allows. If you go thru Holland MI make sure you eat a burger a Goog's. I am also looking a doing a trip that follows the outline of the entire U.P. Looks to be just about 1k as well that would also be a great trip. Google the Great Lake Circle Tour. Some good info on their website.

I would definitely avoid Chicago. I'd rather have a hot poker up my ass then go thru Chicago!!

I thought about taking the ferry from Milwaukee over to Muskegon and back down south as an option.

I would definitely avoid the highways, and this would be a backroad trip for sure.

Did you take 119? I heard it's an awesome road.

I think the loop around Lake Superior looks promising as well.

I've been to many places in Michigan, but not past Houghton Lake. Haven't been any farther north then that.

The first week of July I'm heading up to Harbor Beach, MI in the Thumb area.

I've done the ferry. It takes 4 hours. When I did it, you paid for the vehicle, then you paid for yourself. They put bikes down in the rail car area between the rails and give you two ropes with hooks to hook onto the tracks and tie the bike down. It's a good idea to call and make reservations ahead of time. Motorcycles got to get off the boat first.

Another nice way is to cross the bridge and take route 2 west across the U.P., then go through Escanaba and down to Green Bay. It's all 2 lane through the north woods until then.

Taking the ferry from mill to Muskegon would be ok but you would miss a lot as most of the best roads are north of there in all states. If you have the time do it via the U. P. and bridge. I did not run 119 on this particular trip, took the fast route to the bridge. But I have run it many times as it's only about 15 mi. fom my house, it's a great run, as is the m-22 loop between Traverse City and the lake.

yea, after I posted that I realized your were really close to 119. I would think the Traverse City are would be the best part of the trip.

I wouldn't miss anything by taking the ferry. I'd come up from Indiana, drive thru Muskegon up to the UP, down thru Wisconsin, and then cross back over to Muskegon and back down to Indiana.

I'm 30 miles south of Indy, so Chicago is in the way one way or the other unless I go way around it, and that is some decent miles to do that.

I see what you mean. I wish we had gone around. I'll post pics and video of the bridge crossing when I get it ready.

I took this ride a few years ago and used the Ludington ferry to bypass Chicago. Well worth it! Met some other bikers on the boat and had a good time.

Chicago's the only city in the world that charges money for admission to the world's worst traffic jam. You have to stop every 3 miles and throw your cash in the basket.

BTW, don't EVER use the automated toll lanes on a motorcycle. The loops in the pavement don't work with bikes, and a friend got a gate across the face, knocking him off the bike. Use an attended lane instead.

Dude, you are being too slow! Or should I go yell at the guy on wee-storm? Since it sounds like they were all his cameras.

Or just ride through IPass lanes and pay them online later. It's my strategy. Although, I haven't paid, nor have I been sent a bill.....

I have run the south side of Superior over to Sault Ste. Marie and then down to Ludington taking 75 and then 31 and caught the ferry across to Wisconsin and that was an awesome ride. If you are up there make sure to go to Copper Harbor it is well worth the detour.

Ah, if you are going to Copper Harbor, make sure you don't miss Brockway Mountain. The view is amazing.
