2008 vs 2009 versys

Went to the dealer this morning to pick up the V. Dealer is uncrating the bike (only had green and wanted the blue -- wont be ready till this afternoon) and has a new 2008 they are uncrating as well. I worked a deal on the 09 but the dealer is cutting a better deal on the new 08 (with the kawasaki incentives). The only difference I can find is about 65 lbs of weight and I am taking one of these home this evening. Any significant engineering or design changes between the two years? Pros or cons for one model year over the other? Any insight is much appreciated.

They're pretty much the same . Very small differences. Will the price difference make up for book value between the two years ??? The green is however MUCH faster and may require a little more training to operate.

I can get the 08 for 5599.00 versus 6484.00 for the 09. Misses thinks the blue is hot....and I really am a function over form guy so if mommy gets the revs up over blue then blue it is! (good news is she likes red too which is the color of the crated 08).

They weigh the same.

In the Kawa literature, the 09 is wet or curb weight, whereas the 08 is shown dry (lighter) weight.

Same bike.

The only difference between the 08 and 09 that I am aware of is the 08 does not have the power-robbing emissions control required for CA. That is why the 08 was not available in CA.

Thank you very much for your input. All things being equal I think that the 08 is the better buy and I will be able to add the functional accessories I need and still be under the 09 (naked) price. Again, thanks for your time.

Not me; If I can buy a new bike for basically the same price as a used one (albeit with added stuff), I'll go new every time.

Oh, and as the others have said, there is virtually no difference between the two bikes other than color and $885.00! Buy the '08.

There are indeed a few differences.

The 09 uses a different front brake actuator and lever assy from the previous models. The older ones have a flat surface that pushes in the plunger, the 09 uses a ball and socket type.

Clear turn signal lenses with colored bulbs, which give it a little bit of custom look

You can IF you are lucky enough to have one within a reasonable distance, as the distance increases the cost of getting it home also can increase to a point you are not saving much.

I've seen a couple of guys on here that were really patient and got good deals.

If you have the time it can be fun picking up your new/used bike and turning it into an adventure

Ive tried looking into used ones but when the dealer gives you a great deal and says you can drive it home TODAY, with no hassle at all.ugh Im so weak

That's why I said "virtually" no differences. Those minor items fall under what I call BNG's (Bold New Graphics!); certainly nothing there that would entice me to buy one year over the other. If you REALLY wanted the clear lenses, I would imagine they could be had for far less than $885.00 ! Not to beat a dead horse, but I just can't understand why anybody would pay an extra grand for the same bike.

2 cents,
Dave

Where did that come from?

The first poster asked if there where any engineering or design differences, so I answered the two I thought of.

If it were me I'd save the money and buy the 08 too but color doesn't mean that much to me, some people it does. (last years what ever color car off the lot shopper)

Given the fact your post immediately followed mine where I had stated that there were virtually no differences, I wasn't sure if you were trying to assert that there were indeed some significant differences or not.

In any case, my reply wasn't meant to be antogonistic and If I ruffled any feathers, I apologize.

It sounds like we're both "form follows function" sort of guys! I ALWAYS buy leftover new vehicles when the new ones come out to take advantage of the savings.

Cheers,
Dave

I'd have to say go 08 with bags for the price of an 09.

There hasn't been a Versys in a dealer around here of any year/color that lasted more than three days. Most of the time they are sold before they can uncrate them. Funny thing, I've only seen one other one on the road.

Yes I called her mommy and she is mommy two the two little dirt-track riding boys on my farm. I learned long ago that what mommy says...goes....and if you dont believe it just ask her cause she will tell ya. (gotta love a mountain woman).
