I sprung for the aluminum black powder coated happy trails bags - Excellent. Get them and you will not be disappointed. Also, folks at happy trails are excellent to work with.

I went with the SW Motech racks TRAX aluminum boxes for my 08' V. I think that the happy trails boxes are nice but I found them to be heavier that the TRAX. I also like the fact that with the TRAX boxes, you don't have to worry about the padlock bouncing around while traveling. Trax boxes have the lock built into the latch system. Quite slick. A bit more expensive than HT boxes but worth the money. I have a friend with the HT boxes on his KLR 650; he likes them with no complaints though. I think more people are familiar with the HT boxes than the TRAX for the V.

Good luck. TRAX are available through Twisted Throttle www.twistedthrottle.com
