I don't think any of the big adv/touring bikes are any good for off road regardless of their tire sizes whether it be the 1200GS, Versys 1000, Triumph Explorer, etc. They are just too big and heavy.
I bought my Versys 650 and then 1000 for the riding position and excellent power band and delivery.
I ride 100% street but have ridden a couple short bits on gravel with the 1000 and it was fine but that it the most I would want to do.
