What should I do with my bike?

I need some advice as to what I should do with my bike. Right now this is the best commuter bike I've ever owned and am very happy with. I have an 09 Versys with hard luggage, R1 shock, Givi screen, heated grips, & GPS. I did over 20,000km last summer. She now has a total 38,000km (26,000 miles) on the clock. This season with my new job, my commute will be 200 km per day. Just going to work alone will add another 28,000 km this year, plus I do about 2 or 3 bike trips adding 4000km each trip. So let's say I do a nice 35,000 km this year. That means at the end of this year she'll have 72,000 km (44,000 miles).

Is it better to run this puppy into the ground or should I cut her loose and start looking for a replacement before she has no resale value left?

Unless you just want a new bike, which is a perfectly fine, keep riding... don't look back till you get many many more miles.

Keep it, run it. Lots of KMs left in there. I'm at 25,000+ on my 09 and plan to keep it for the long run.

I'm with weljo. My '08 has 41,000 miles, and I don't plan on getting rid of it, or replacing it, for a LONG, LONG time! Check your valves every-now-and-then, change oil, WD40 your chain....

Not saying you have to many miles on it now, but most people either want low kileage bike or they want a steal on the price. At your mileage you have greatly reduced the resale value already, so you might as well enjoy it now.

Buy a used VW diesel if you want low cost per mile. Make sure it is a manual and not an automatic though. The autos have problems after 250,000km. The engine will go 500,000km without issue.

How about "run it into the pages of history"? With all those miles I'm sure you have many stories to tell, and if you keep it you will only generate more. Imagine telling those GS riders at gas pumps that you have as many (or more) miles as they do and all at a fraction of the cost!

Plus, you know this bike very, very well by now. Keep it and ride it proudly!

I am with everyone else, keep it. You cannot hurt the resale value all that much with these bikes. Good low mileage used ones with lots of goodies can already be found for around $4,000-$5,000. Even with a boat load of miles one would probalby sell for around $2,500 or so, so you might lose 1,500 to 2,500 in resale. Thats not really all that much.

I ride a lot and have 2 bikes, that way the mileage goes up half as fast. If I were you I'd probably buy another used bike, something with a different purpose. You'll enjoy having different bikes and both will last you twice as long

I was looking at the same scenario and decided to keep running mine. But I'm not really comfortable with "running it into the ground" and all that implies. Bike performance degrades subtly and you don't realize that the bike you're riding now isn't as sharp as the one you bought 4 years ago.
Now at 36k (miles) and just had a Level III service done at my local shop. That's Valve Check, Plugs and Air Filter, Plus Coolant and Brakes flush and fill. Also had a Fork Service, replaced the Steering Head Bearing as well as the Wheel Bearings, Front and Rear. None of these parts were broken, but all were well-used. Doing this in the winter when I don't mind being without the bike for a few days is much better than trying to get something replaced in the summer. Oh, and the shop remembers the guy who brings in his bike in the winter. I do get preferential treatment in the summer, jumping to the front of the line when my bike needs something- usually its just tires.
