ReRiding after 2 years in storage --What needs to be done ?
I have a 2009 Kawasaki Versys 650. I had it in storage for two years. Has very few miles on it.
Of course the battery went dead & started fine with a new battery.
I was able to ride it around the block to get re-inspected & re-registered & it rides fine.
Have not taken it on freeway at speed limits 75 mph
Are there any suggestions as to what I may need to do in terms returning to use such as cleaning carbs or have Spark plug (don't know if it has one or two or zero LOL) replaced etc at a mechanic Do I need to do this ? Or do I just go for it ......as everything seems to work great .
I am not going too far but may go locally for rides around 100 to 200 miles (or just day trips) .
I asked for help riding places or groups / clubs in North Texas area but got no replies
I would check the tires for cracks ( doubt if you see any ) If the old gas is in the tank i would put some fuel stabilizer in it. If not put in some fresh gas with some BerryMan's B-12 or some other fuel cleaner and you should be good to go...
imho, it's too late for that gas. Fuel stabiliser will NOT restore it's properties.
That gas is probably ok for a lawnmower, and perhaps not even that because it likely had ethanol.
I assume you have already dumped the fuel? Service the bike,Service the chain,If the tires sat on the ground for two years without moving especially in the dirt I would be looking for a new set. After riding just keep a watch for any leaks of any kind. Seals tend to get hard when they are not lubricated over time and become hard and will at some point start to leak.I would also pull the seat and tank and look for any sight of rodent damage to the wiring and air cleaner air box and element.
No carbs it is fuel injected. You have been running it on the old gas so it is not deteriorated to the point it will not run, but I would suck any remaining original gas out and use it in the lawn mower. Refill with new fresh gas. +1 on the clutch cable and throttle cable lube. Along with chain lube, air filter service and oil and filter change. If you have the owners manual look at all of the pre ride, and service checks up to the age of the bike. Coolant and brake fluid replacement may be due by age not miles. For the tires look in the bottom of the groves and on the sidewall for any cracking. It passed the inspection so they should have looked at that point.
Both the owners manual and service manual are available on-line for this bike, check the periodical maintenance schedule and find out the items that need to be serviced and changed according to the years gone past. Most of this has to do with fluids and rubber parts like hoses and gaskets, change intervals for these things are anywhere between 2 and 5 years. The whole storage and winterize topic is overrated and overdone most of the time. Parking a bike for the winter, which for many people means 3 to 4 months is like nothing and a few years in a dry storage is nothing extraordinary, you just have to keep on top of the maintenance just like you would if you were riding it. It's not like it's some 1930s tech with exposed bearings and oil made of bear fat sitting in the rain, needing all lubrication points hit once per week and wrapped in cosmoline paper if put away for more than 14 days.
