Key Hole

I got to thinking (a thing which I am wont to do too much). Why is the ignition key slot deep down in a hole? Then I got to thinking: There have been times I've had to chop ice off the key hole of a bike. We do get ice and sleet here in Dull-Aware. Have had to knock the ice off in order to get the key in so's I could ride home. Here we have an ignition key slot that how the hell you sposed to get the ice out, all down in that hole? Then I got to thinking if it rained hard wouldn't you get a key hole full of water? How's that affect the works?

At which point I whipped my can of keyhole lube off the shelf and squirted some in the slot. I have a lock de-icer can here somewheres, but I might as well wait until December for that. Graphite and alcohol, I think is what it is.

What's the advantage to putting your key slot down in the bottom of a hole anyways? Anyone have a grasp of that?

No, but in your OWNERS MANUAL it will tell you that you can put just the TIP of your key into the 'slot' and turn it, which ONLY turns a 'cover', thus keeping "stuff" out.

personally i leave my gloves over my key hole (they a cheap harbor freight gloves ) and my good gloves in the trunk box and that keeps crap out of the ignition. the main reason its down so low is because thats where the steering lock engages into the frame

yes im a guy.

If you are worried about the ice in the ignition... make an ignition cover from cap off of a spray can.

Measure the ignition barrel diameter and then find a similar diameter cap and cut a slit so the cap can cover the key hole area so Ice and rain do sit in the 'bowl' and freeze the key hole over.

When you NEED to do this - it's time to park the V and make a hot-toddy!
