Hearing Impaired / Ear Plugs / Communication ?

I was responding to a question about blue tooth , from my FM radio on the phone, which uses the earphones as a antenna for the radio, which I can do with my hearing aids through my surflink , problem is I have a 27 DB loss at a specific frequency 1300 to 1500 HZ, which largely affects speech recognition .

So for a change I thought to ask others what they use, my thought was to use a remote switchable mic that would communicate with, and below is what I posted on the other thread :

FYI I don't have my hearing aids in while riding, in fact I have earplugs in, one consideration is to get something like Sena or Cardo Scala with a means of having a remote mic, as someone talking to me with helmet on and ear plugs in is like the cone of silence . A PITA need to take glasses off ,helmet off and ear plugs out, just to hear the conversation.

What do others do that are hearing impaired like me, besides writing something on paper.??

I use sign language. No other way I know other than pen and paper. Often times people will communicate with me by typing or dictating on their phone.

Just because I am Deaf does not mean I can not roar.

My hearing is poor, when riding I use a Sena with noise cancelling earphones works great for hearing my turn by turn directions and music etc. . The sena intercom works great if another rider has a com. However it it very difficult to hear another rider just talking to me when I am all wired up. Wish more riders had a com.

Yep, hearing loss is a PITA, isn't it? I don't wear my "hearing devices" when riding either, and although I do usually wear earplugs I find that it doesn't hinder conversation using either Scala Rider or Sena communicators. In fact earplugs help reduce wind noise but don't reduce what I can hear through helmet speakers, I suppose because they are so close to my ears. That may not be scientific at all but it seems to work for me.

The newer Sena's have a an "ambient" mode where they turn on a mic outside and amplify the sound to your helmet speakers / ear buds.

Earplugs + helmet speakers probably wouldn't work so well (but that's what I do), but if you use noise isolating headphones plugged into the Sena, you can hear very well.
