Why am I still alive?

This morning I was on my 2012 V stopped at a set of lights.

A semitrailer knocked me down from behind and continued driving with my bike and me wedged under the front bumper.

What followed was without doubt the freakiest ride of my entire life. A 270m death slide, with sparks flying, onlookers screaming, and car horns blaring.

I have surfed some big, scary waves, but nothing compares with being in the jaws of a massive truck, ‘surfing’ the bitumen, and waiting for the inevitable moment when I would be crushed under huge wheels and tonnes of metal..

My life flashed before my eyes, not once but over and over. I realized my leg was pinned and I could not climb up onto the truck’s grille, so I said my goodbyes (just in case) and then focused my mind on hanging on for dear life.

The Universe was looking after me. The driver finally took notice of the commotion and stopped. And just in time, as my riding pants had taken all the punishment they could withstand.

I’m still feeling a little shaken. I have a graze on my hip and a sore neck and elbow. But I am at work and continuing my day. My poor bike is worse off but it is remarkably intact and repairable.

Enjoy life x

You are one fortunate soul to be able to walk away from that. And you apparently have nerves of steel. After something like that, there's no way on Earth I'd be able to go to work.

But I'm with Invader on this one...WTF?!?

Glad you're still here to tell the tale,

Similar thing happened to my nephew.. I girl in a vw beetle pulled out and hit him broadside, bike went over in front of her car but the sun was setting and she claimed she didn't see what had happened.. She said her car felt sluggish and was really in the gas before honking cars and yelling people got her stopped.. He fared similar to you other than his knee and ankle got rather rashed.. You are one fortunate person, glad to hear you are ok.. Bikes are replaceable..

I'm lucky to have lived to learned a valuable lesson - that maintaining a safe road position when stationary is just as important as safe positioning when on the move.

I had cut infront of the already stopped truck, passing on its passenger side. The size of the truck meant the driver could not see me pull up in front. Yes he jumped the lights which is why i was still stationary, but I contributed with an illegal move to stop the way i did.

The smart thing would be not to lane split and keep a buffer even when stopped.

Despite all the advice I have been given to give up riding I am planning to get back into it, but with a new appreciation of safe riding. Just some repairs and new boots and pants to sort out first...

I will be doing a closer inspection of the bike tomorrow to reveal whether it really is going to be repairable. I will take some photos to post then. I will also get around to posting some photos of my boots and riding pants for the education of anyone who doesn't ride ATGATT.

Safe riding everyone and thanks for your kind thoughts.

Holy Moly!!!....glad you made it though that and are able to tell the tale. The pavement Gods were surely on your side with this one!

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

It is remarkable that you are still around to tell the story, even more remarkable you still went to work. Glad you are okay, good you were wearing the gear, and that you learned a safety lesson in the procsess.
