Ridermagazine.com Blog

Got a cool new gig: I will be writing a column for Rider magazine's blog. Looks like six or so times a year. First entry is here. I doubt I will be retiring any sooner, but there should be a bit extra for gas and tires.

Good read, enjoyed the dance and all inspired to asked one of my metals dance partners out for a spin as it is going to get to 29 C today. Might do the twist

Thank you Scott, that was beautiful. First time up and you hit it out of the park. I wonder if you ever did out pace the rain.

Thanks.

Yes, I did outpace the rain that day. With radar on my smart phone and a bit of old fashioned weather intuition, I guessed that riding farther south than I might have otherwise would get me home dry. If I did get wet, it would be near the end of my ride when my final push from the south met the front coming out of the southwest. At my last gas stop in Connecticut I called home and asked Mrs Bones to put one of the cars in the driveway so I could drive right into the garage. Perhaps 10 minutes after I got home the sky opened up. That ride involved some up-tempo dancing, for sure.

Very nice! Great explanation about why some of us ride. I have always though of it as composing music. When things all come together, its sweet music, effortless, graceful, a moving experience.

Life is short..Have fun!

Many of us feel the same way; few, it seems, can express it so eloquently. Well done, sir. Thank you.

funny, i've used that same metaphor! though i've never really analyzed the dance beyond the mechanical music and operating the machine in the twisties.

i most recently used that analogy for a classmate asking the standard questions. this is a girl who has "protected me" while she happened to be driving behind me to the schoolhouse. she happens to love dancing so when i put it to her that way, she "got it" immediately. she even worked up the courage to hit me up for a ride. loved it.

anyway, good show, mate!

In a world full of people, only some want to ride. Isn't that crazy?

Nicely written Bones. I was thinking about whitewater kayaking, (another of my avocations), the other day after a ride on some nice mountainous curves, and thought how much the two sports hold in common. It is a dance, with your partner, the bike, (or boat), on the changing dance floor, (the road, or river). It's a changing kaleidoscope of moves we make and conditions we react to as we dance along life's highways and streams. It's the moves we make and the grace with which we make them that lends such satisfaction, joy, and fulfillment to the endeavor.

I shared it on facebook with the title 'If you've asked me why I feel about motorcycles like I do, read this'. I had a few friends that could much better understand it then the few times I tried to describe it.

Very well written Scott! I think you hit the nail on the head for a lot of us.

My editor for Thunder Press magazine told me I won't get rich writing articles for them, just consider it "beer" money.
Enjoy the writting.
