Beefing up Subframe

I've read somewhere (maybe here?) that Kawasaki doesn't recommend using both rear rack/panniers & a top box (together) because the subframe may not carry the weight especially when carrying a passenger.

Has anyone come up with a means to "beef up" the subframe? Any DIY mods or aftermarket mods available?

Kawasaki claims to have reinforced the subframe already, with the expectation that people would be using this bike to tour. Subframe failure is a problem I have yet to see mentioned on this or the UK boards, so if it were me I wouldn't worry about it. BTW, plenty of people are loading up their bikes just as you describe.

When this was a new model, back in 07, Kawasaki released quite a bit of info on the design approach that was taken. I'm pretty sure there was mention made of a reinforced subframe, but my wife tells me my memory is not the steel trap it once was, so who knows? Nevertheless, the trellis components are, as you say, structural, and it would stand to reason that this assembly would be stronger than just tubing cantilevered out the back of the bike (as on the er6 models).

Thanks, this is good info. I'd always assumed they were the same.
Good advice (Loctite!) as well.

Loctite AND carry a couple of extra bolts. Having the extra bolts got me out of trouble in the past (on a different bike but same idea).
