if a manatee hat a foot...

it'd probably look like this...

friday afternoon my wife and i hopped on my 09 Kawi Versys for a weekend trip up to deal's gap/cherohala/28/etc etc. met our friends brian (fz1) and kristy (sv650) and had a nice, uneventful, somewhat chilly ride up to robbinsville, nc.

at 9am saturday am we met our other friend tom (honda st1300), ate, and headed towards Deal's Gap (the tail of the dragon). we rode up and down a few times and had a blast. traffic was light and there weren't any cars to speak of.

after the gap we headed over to the cherohala skyway and took a detour down river road by the tellico river. we rode all the way out to the gravel by where lower 2 used to be (back when the OHV trails were still open), turned around, and started back.

i'm riding easy with my wife on the back. i'm well in my half of the road when all the sudden a little beat up import truck pulling a homebuilt travel trailer appears out of nowhere taking up most of my lane. a split second later my left foot smacked the ass end of the trailer. i was shocked.

somehow i stayed rubber side down and kept rolling. my foot was instantly numb. i searched for the peg but there was nothing there. i kept rolling because there wasn't a good place to stop. i finally mustered up the courage to look down at my foot, fully expecting to see it turned in the wrong direction. i was happy to see it pointed dead ahead. wiggled my toes, rolled my foot around and realized everything worked. the pic above is from a few hours after it happened. this one is from last night.

after a little while i pulled into a parking lot by an improved bathroom near bald river falls. got off the bike, pulled of the boot, couldn't bring myself to take the sock off.

after a lot of tinkering we got the bike into 3rd gear and i was able to ride it out. flagged down a ranger and rode around with him for an hour looking for the travel trailer with no luck. we had about 70mi to get back to the hotel including the rest of the skyway. i managed to have a good time even though i was stuck in 3rd gear with no footpeg..

we stopped at an unnamed cycle shop to get the bracket tack welded. after 2 hours of waiting around i bolted it back on and it lasted all of 1 mile ... stuck the vise grips in and i rode her home like this.. (you can see where the shifter/peg bracket is broken)

anyway, things could be worse. i doubt anything in my foot is broken since i can walk on it. it's black, blue, swollen and sore, but it's still there, we didn't go down, and i still have all my skin. i call that a win. 2 more inches into my lane and i might (or might not!) be posting this from the hospital...

lastly, we stopped on the way home for a butt break. met this hot chick who felt sorry for me and let me take these photos for a memory and some comfort. good thing my wife isn't the jealous type hell she took the pictures!

Damn! Glad you are ok man. That is really nasty but better than the alternative situation. Good job of keeping the bike upright and your passenger safe.

Check the picture takers websites from the dragon (killboy.com is one). The car/trailer might have passed through there and the pictures guys might have the plate in a pic. If you remember the car well enough, it might be in a pic without the trailer.

Incredible story. Riding is like football in some respects, it is a game of inches. Glad you are OK!

yep, alpinestars ridge boots. they helped some with the impact, but had i been wearing tennis shoes or something less substantial my foot would've been lacerated as well.. atgatt!!

and believe it or not the foot doesn't hurt all that bad. i can walk on it and my toes don't hurt. everything's a tad sore however.

now last night my little girl stepped on my foot right where the hematoma is. that hurt pretty dang bad! but i'm 100% mobile and hardly ever in any pain.

ace bandage + ibuprofen + ice at night has done the trick for me. the purple is starting to fade and the swelling is reduced. i told my wife the night it happened that i wasn't going to bitch about my foot at all considering what could have been..

glad to be posting here.

oh, and in case anyone is wondering, the stay i need to replace is p/n 35064 and is only going to cost me $47.24
