Chain lube/wax frequency

I've been reading some of the posts where people say they lube their chains every 300-400 miles, or every gas fill up.... is it really necessary to lube that frequently? I have also read that you should not over-lube.
Also, I recently switched to wax for the chain as I have heard it helps with gunk fling. How often do you wax opposed to lube? Is there much of a difference?

You should lube it when the o-rings look dry. It's not possible to over-lube, but more of it gets flung off. If I'm on a trip I lube the chain every morning so I don't have to think about it during the day.

OIL every 300miles or just make sure the chain is at least seen wet with oil every time you look at it.

Dry chain will cause serious damage to sprockets and chain wear.

There's no iron rule of thumb. I like to lube right after any long stretch of mileage. Sometimes it's every 300 miles. Sometimes it's only 150 miles. After riding in the rain, I'll dry the chain and lube it again.

I also spray on some lube when I store my bike for the winter and again when I bring it out in the spring.

I guess I lube mine every 4-500 miles. Di it when it's warm after a ride out. Tend to use Castrol Dry Chain Wax, doesn't fling off all that much.

Any spots of the chain, especially the sides, that don't have a layer of lube or wax on them are going to rust. I use www.fuelly.com to track my mileage but also enter notes against odometer readings on when I did maintenance items on things like the chain, changing the oil, etc. so I don't forget.
