Key West, FL to Deadhorse, AK on a Versys

Hey all, just wanted to put up a note here about my upcoming ride from Key West to Deadhorse (with a lot of zig-zagging in between). I'll be leaving Key West this coming Wednesday and have started an rr over on the advrider site. You can find my rr by following this link. I'll be primarily updating that ride report as I make my way across the country, so check it frequently, but I'll also try to update this one from time to time with some of the more spectacular pictures that I hope to capture along the way.

Just because all RRs are worthless without pictures, here's one of me on the end of Blimp road, on Cudjoe Key, this morning when I went for a little shakedown ride with the bike almost fully loaded. (Cudjoe Key is just a few keys up from Key West).

Congrats on your ride and you look pretty well equipped. I hope you have your suspension dialed up for the added weight.

On another note along this thread regarding long distance rides, I just had a gentleman ride for Minnesota to Dallas Tx just to have a center stand and highway pegs installed. After about an hour of installation, he was back on his Versys and in route back to Minnesota. He made mention that when he got back to Minnesota, checked in with the wife, he was off to California. Thats more than I can take!

Have fun! Is it just me or is that front tire as huge as it looks?

How long are you going to be on the road?

Yeah it's big! It's technically a rear tire; Metzler tourance 130/80 17.
I plan on taking between 1 and half to two months for my run up to Alaska and back to Virginia. But I've really got all the time in the world as I've quit my job. Or atleast until the money runs out!

That would be good. From where and when are you leaving? Where are you headed to? And will you be riding a Versys as well? If you got a ride report going somewhere, post a link!

Sounds like a great time. No job and riding the bike with plenty of time. Sounds like the old TV show "Then Came Bronson".
Really like the Tourance profile. Does this tire make my bike look fat? Oh yea.

Just a little update. I'm now in Hannibal, MO; weather until today was great, but this morning it's storming and raining here. Oh well, I knew I'd hit rain eventually. Here are some pictures.

The starting point.

Wild fires in southern FL.

Stopping by the Florabama!

The roads are just God awful!

The National Cemetary at the site of the Battle of Shiloh.

Stopped and checked out the Barber museum. (Way too many pictures of various bikes to pick 1 to post up).

Some other road travellers; I helped this one to the other side.

Made it to St. Louis.

Alright, that's it for now. If you want to see all my pictures, just go check out my full ride report on ADVrider. Here's the link.

You passed within a couple of hours of me. Barber Museum is awesome. Hiked Shiloh several times. Did you ride a piece of the Natchez Trace as well?

Is the FloraBama still there? Is it still on Perdido Key near Pensacola? I thought it was destroyed by a hurricane several years ago. I use to hang there when I was in flight school at NAS Pensacola. I lived in a condo just a half mile East of there....within crawling distance of home.

A wild place, it was.

Oh yeah, it's still there and going strong. Not sure anything really could destroy it since it's pretty much a bunch of shacks with some tents inbetween...

Still tryin' to recapture the magic of being 10 years old on a Honda Mini Trail 50...

Yep, I was on and off the Natchez Trace for a while. Beautiful country up through that way.

I couldn't agree more about that road after the ferry, it was superb!

Yep, it's still there. You can never get out of eyesight of a bar! Now that's good business!

Alright, so I last left off at St. Louis; I'm now in Kalispell, MT and should be leaving from here today and headed into Alberta. I've been hanging out here for a day, doing oil change and stuff, and waiting on some replacement rain gear that should arrive today (had a rain gear failure about 4/5 days ago).

A little rerouting was necessary due to flooding in some areas of Missouri.

Enjoying some fantastic dirt in South Dakota, on my way to the Badlands.

The Badlands, Wind Cave park, Custer State park, Needles HWY, & Spearfish canyon; if you've never been to the Black Hills area of SD, YOU ARE MISSING OUT! I've been here several times before, and it's STILL AMAZING! Check out my RR on the ADV site for all the pictures.

The eye of the needles, up on Needles Hwy.

Mt. Rushmore.

Spearfish Canyon.

Devil's Tower, WY.

Bear Tooth pass was closed, but I enjoyed Chief Joseph Hwy.

Old Faithful.

The wildlife is ever so abundant in Yellowstone.

On the outskirts of Riceville, MT (south of Great Falls). Just FANTASTIC!

Flathead lake, a little south of Big Fork, MT.

Hope you guys enjoy!
