Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix @ Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

Im thinking of taking a trip to Cali to watch the races. Has anyone gone years past and care to discuss your experience?

I've done Laguna Seca Moto GP (twice) and Indianapolis Moto GP (once).

Indy is a better experience.

jmlmjmjm - Thanks for the response. Care to explain why Indy is better? I would think the Laguna event would be better due to that weekend being a AMA and MOTOGP event.

From what I've heard from Eurosport's commentators, Indy is a blue-collar, gear-head's, proper raceway with a century of heritage and Laguna is a bunch of smug California SOBs and celebrities.

I'm not exactly quoting but that's the general idea.

I would love to go to Laguna just to see that corner. It gives me nightmares.

You could only be talking about the Corkscrew turn....

Yeah that is some scary turn. Ive ran that track in a motogp game, very very tricky turn.

Moto GP Laguna cons:

Only Moto GP, no Moto 2 or 125's. Yes I know the AMA comes but even that is watered down with not all the classes.

Can't view a great deal of the track, some of the best viewing spots are on dirt (literally), over track access to the infield is always jammed up, parking is tough, (you will shuttle unless you ride in), sound system & video monitors not that great.

pros:

Fantastic location with great parties in downtown Monterey, hip CA vibe, legendary track and turn (corkscrew).

Indy Moto GP cons:

I struggle here....

pros:

The facility and staff know how to host a function (Indy 500), they excel at making you feel welcome, more seating with better sightlines (go as high as you can), all grass infield with berms built up for seating and viewing, more and better facilities (bathrooms), a museum in the infield, better sound and more screens, you can park at the track, a very good downtown block party (Fri-Sat nights), all the streets are renamed to legendary motorcyle racers, the whole town knows why you are visiting.

Plus, plus, plus, AMA Mile Dirt Track racing on Saturday night!

One shining example of doing it right:

You can pre-order a box lunch and pick it up upon arrival. It has everything you need for a full day of racing, chicken, baked beans, a half sandwich, chips, cookie, cole slaw, apple, and drinks....theoretically you do not need to leave your seat as it's all there.

When my wife and I talk of going again it is always Indy.

Hope that helps...

Interesting. In every other thread on every other forum I've ever read (ok, so like two US based forums and one Euro based site), Indy gets trashed for being a "Roval".

I live an hour from Indy and have just been to my first Moto GP in 2010. It was a very... mellow... event compared to the 7 USGP's I attended. Surprised at the the modest turnout. BUT - that essentially means a great choice of seats, short concession lines or no lines at all, and great opportunities to try the motorcycles on display in the vendor area.

Have not been to Laguna Seca but would like to some day.

Hope that helps some.
