Rear Box questions

How do the Givi's compare to Kawasaki's for hard side bags? Looking at getting set soon.

Same bags. Only difference is the color-matched inserts that Kawasaki has.

Yup. But I am pretty sure you can put the colored Kawi panels on the real Givis. Or paint them like I did.

I believe one major difference between racks is that you can't mount a top box if you're using the kawi side racks. Not sure about the Givi racks.

as I understand it the only difference between OEM panniers and Givi V35 panniers is that the OEM ones are branded 'Versys', ie they have a Versys badge glued / stuck on the side. the OEM bags are made by Givi. You cna get colour cordinated inserts from Kawasaki for all colours prior to 2010. As yet I don't think you can get the 2010 Yellow and possibly the 2008 (US) red. Givi do do their standard range of colours which are usually gloss plain colours IE not the candy/pearlescent colours of the Versys

I don't think you can get red inserts from Givi or Kawasaki. At least you can't in the states. You can paint either. I think the difference in the top case rack is that Kawasaki sells the SW Motech rack for the top case. I don't know who makes the OEM side case racks.

Steve

I bought a motorcycle because my wife said that I couldn't! Now I have two and she still says I can't have another one!

OEM top box rails from SW Motech
OEM panniers + racks from Givi
..thats why you cannot have an OEM top box + rails AND OEM panniers + racks

you either
buy Givi Top Box rails in place of the OEM / SW motech rails to match the OEM / Givi pannier racks
OR
buy SW Motech pannier racks in place of the OEM / Givi pannier racks to match the OEM / SW Motech rails

in essence stick to the same manufacturer and you should be OK

The Versys branded hard side cases are made my Givi. The side sticker label is the only difference between the two V35 models.
(I have these bags.)

The Versys branded rack for the V35 cases is made by Givi and has integrated welded grad handles (replaces the stock grand handles).
(I have these racks.)

The Versys branded rear rack is made my SW-Motech (the same thins as their Alu-Rack) and replaces the stock grab handles.
(I have this rack.)

You can make these two racks work together.
All you have to do it cut the welded grab handles on the side case racks, grind the welds spots smooth and paint the tabs. The SW-Motech rack will then mount very nicely as it would otherwise.

The two components were made ostensibly "incompatible" to prevent "overloading" of the bike - a legal issue. Note, Kawi was already sued by someone who got into an acccident then stated it was partially Kawi's fault for not including reflectors on the hard bags. If want them, you can find the different colored panels on the net, or paint them yourself.
It went this route because it is a very durable combo and I got very good deals on all of the components.
