some quirks

After reading on this forum about about shifting gears by putting pressure on the lever and then pulling in clutch has worked out really well. It needs some practice but makes the shifting clunk and jerk free. But a couple of times putting pressure on the shift lever has resulted in an actual shift without pressing clutch- obviously resulting in a massive jerk forward. Any ideas why? I don't think I was putting too much pressure on the lever to force it to change without clutch.

Also, moving into sixth gear seems to drag the bike a bit. Would loose chain give this feeling?

Unintended shift = too much pressure.

What rpm are you running the motor at when shifting to 6th?

Not sure about he rest of the camp, but my bike is usually at more than 6 grand when I hit 6th gear. There is NO drag.

If you break torque by rolling off the throttle while exerting pressure on the shifter, it will pop into the next gear. Once you get used to how much pressure to use and when to use it, you won't have that problem.

Yep, usually somewhere between 6k and 9k. I don't care much for rpms down under 5k. It's vibe-o-matic at 4500. That seems to be the resonant rpm on mine.

Yep, after you get used to it you won't need to use the clutch at all above 2nd.

Usualy, I only depress the clutch halfway, and it make for very smooth, clunkless shift

The "pre-load" technique was kind of a Beemer thing, especially with the older bikes the shifting was very rough without it. But it works great on a lot of bikes.
