Kabuto Kamui Review

Back in the spring I decided I wanted a new helmet. A few things the helmet needed to have was a flip down tinted inner visor, and a Pinlock shield. Unfortunately this leaves VERY few options here in the US. I was only able to find the HJC IS-17, and a Givi model, that I could not find a single stocking dealer in the US(I believe thy were removed from here?)

I went into my local dealer listed on the HJC website as I will not buy a helmet that I have not tried on. Its amazing the differences of head shapes that exist!

The dealer did not have the HJC, but did have a brand I had never heard of, Kabuto out of Japan.

I was shown the Kamui model as it has both a drop down visor, and a Pinlock. The shape fit my head very good(I have no idea what its called for shape but I also fit very well into a Scorpion EXO 700).

Positives-
-Pinlock shield. AMAZING! I have closed the shield, and breathed as hard as possible to fog it. The shield fogs horribly around the edges, but nothing where the Pinlock is. I am really looking forward to this during my late fall commutes to work.
-"G-Slot" There is a 1/4-1/2 inch slot for your glasses to slide into, without them being pushed into the side of your head.
-Drop down visor is dark enough to do a good job on sunny days.
-Graphics. I bought the Fluente design, and feel it is one of the best looking helmets I have ever seen.
-Chin strap. The helmet has a ratchet system rather than D-loops to secure the chin strap. I can easily work it with gloves on.
-Ear pockets. I have installed speakers in the helmet for music, as there is very large ear pockets in the helmet.

Negatives-
-Shield detentes. When I was trying the helmet on I did not realize how little effort it took to lower the shield. I personally like to ride with my shield up the majority of the time(I wear either sunglasses or clear glasses at all times that are safety rated and legal eye protection). The shield had a horrible problem of the wind shutting it anytime I went over 40mph!

I went back and visited the dealer this past week, and discussed the problem with them. I was immediately told "It is illegal to ride with the shield raised and that's why it closed". I pointed out all of the helmets that the dealer had on the wall with no face shields at all, and told him how I always wear safety glasses, so its perfectly legal, plus the models he had on his wall required much more effort to close than mine....

The salesman told me he would call his rep to inquire and get back to me. On my way out the door another salesman looked at it and told me something was wrong with it.

After calling the rep supposedly the rep said the helmet was designed to close automatically at 40, but they decided to give me a new set of pivot points(even though the first set were working properly) Also the salesman supposedly called several other helmet brands and they are ALL designed to close around 40mph(yet every other helmet I own (6) stays open) The new pivot pieces now keep the visor open to about 60mph which is acceptable to me. I HATE being lied to by a salesman, and this is the main reason I try to always avoid dealerships.

Over all I would recommend this helmet to other people.

Here are some pics.
Showing the drop down visor.

You can see the Pinlock attached to the main shield.

Showing the "G-Slot" for eyeglasses, you can also see my speakers.

The ratchet strap rather than D-rings.

The graphics. Usually I am a flat black kind of guy, but I loved this look.

You left out an important bit of information, what certification does it carry?
