Airhawk Seats... Opinions Please

I went on a long haul trip on the Versys and one pain I could not alleviate was along my right hip/upper leg. After 200 miles it was extremely distracting. Then after taking breaks it would come back in around 50 to 70 miles and the cycle would repeat the next day. Met some riders on HD's and one of them swore up and down how the Airhawk made a huge difference. Has anyone tried one on a Versys 650? Improvement for multi-day trips?

I use it and I could not go on a long trip without it. Totally worth it in my opinion ($$$ )

Iíve used the Same AirHawk on five different bikes for the Last five years. What I do is put just a little air in it & I have a 2Ē memory foam on top of the air bladder inside of the zip cover. Works Great. The main thing is not to put to much air in blatter or you will be sloshing back & fourth to much. AirHawk or cheaper than a custom seat & ďprobably ď a lot softer . JMO

That's what the rider on the HD told me, just a little bit of air.

I was considering splurging for a Sargent seat at one point. The Versys isn't too tall for me but it's at my limits and thought a Sargent Low would be good for both comfort and a slight height adjustment. Does the Airhawk increase the reach to the ground?

I don't use my Airhawk on my Versys (I have a Sargent regular height seat and a sheepskin pad), but I've used it on prior bikes. Works great, though it does impart a slight disconnected-from-the-bike feeling, which may or may not bother you. It also increases the reach to the ground (and pegs), but only a tiny bit if you inflate it properly (as noted by others above, the proper way is barely inflated at all).

I bought a "cruiser" size Air Hawk many years ago and have used it on several bikes. It did not work well on the Versys due to the "shape". Now that I no longer have the Versys it works great on the Sportster. Well worth the money. As mentioned, a small amount of air is all that is required, just enough so that you don't "feel" the seat.

We use them on all of our V1kís for work. Wouldnít think of riding without one.

We didn't want to spend $700 on 14 seats so we thought weíd try the Airhawks first. We did try the Wild Ass, but it kept losing air. No problems with the Airhawks.

Like the other posters say, a puff of air is perfect. I never used foam or sheepskin, but sounds like the way to go on long hauls. That said, we ride and get off and on throughout our trip. However, I donít believe the Airhawk would be nearly as comfortable without highway pegs. They add another level of movement that makes long hauls much more comfortable.

The Airhawk raises you about an inch. I am 6í 4Ē and still have no problems with the height.

With all the pollution and climate change, what kind of world will we leave Keith Richards?

Have been using the AirHawk on my bikes for longer hauls. I agree with all others on the amount of air and relatable comfort. I think the amount of disconnect it causes from the bike is definitely an issue for most short hauls. While I really like the comfort it offers for the long hours in the saddle, I find the disconnect it causes from the bike is actually a detriment to my riding style. If you're into cornering and moving with the bike, it makes shifting your center of gravity tough. As it causes another factor you have to think about for sliding your a$$ across the seat. And yes, It definitely changes your standover height.
+1 for comfort. -1 for agility.

I used a cheap camping air pillow under a sheepskin on my Concours 1000 for years. Just a puff of air did the trick. I rode over 19000 km on a hot summer trip that included the Mojave in July.
No Airhawk needed, for me.

I have a Seat Concepts on my V650. I have modified it and plan to post photos in a separate thread.

I HAVE used (and still do - occasionally...) a sheepskin, but w/ the nose of my V650 seat raised I'm pretty comfortable W/ or W/OUT the sheepskin.

Tried an airhawk on my c-10 and the Versys 650. Could not get used to the disconnected felling and on the c-10 it put my legs to sleep. I almost dropped the bike when I put my feet down. I think I had too much air in it. My wife is using it on the c-10 now and loves it.

I cannot comment on AirHawk but I found this place on EBay that sells foam and gel to modify your existing seat. They will also do the work if you ship them the seat. They will install foam and gel. Seat looks stock when done but is a huge improvement. I can ride for hours without discomfort. its not as good as my Russell seat but much less $$ and looks like stock seat. I highly recommend, totally worth it. At the time, Charge was less that $150 (did not modify pillion area). Just email them and they will send quote.

Thanks everyone for all the great replies. Iíll probably get an Airhawk to try before my next big ride but I donít think I will like the disconnected feeling. One of the reasons I picked the Versys was how good the rider/road connection is on the twistes. However, if Iím doing a long highway slog like I did between Boston and Milwaukee this summer, maybe it is worth the trade off.

You will adapt to the "disconnected feeling". You may find positive benefits such as, instead of scooting your butt over for weight shift simply pressing down on your inside cheek to accomplish the same thing. The other point is that you are connected to the bike with your feet, hands, and knees against the tank. We all respond differently but for me calming my whiney hiney is foremost. good Luck to you....

Just remember not to put very much air in the air bladder & you wonít feel much disconnected from the Bike!!!

Well, it's a personal thing. I purchased my Air Hawk in person from the owner of the company, who also showed me the proper way to inflate it. Even inflating it the proper way, I feel a bit disconnected. But others may not.

Iíve used the same airhawk on my past 3 bikes. I used it with a alaska sheepskin to go on a 12k mile trip this past June and was fine for the seat. My knees were in pain for almost two months after the trip however, need to work on the knee bend situation with my V650.

I donít feel disconnected with the airhawk and ride aggressively in twistyís with it all the time. It does take some getting used too but the comfortís worth it. Pulling it forward a little also eliminates the forward slant that the stock versys seat has.

Have you got foot-peg lowering blocks? Mine (motowerk ones) lower the 'pegs 1.3" which REALLY OPENS up the rider triangle.

Which can be eliminated for a VERY few $ - a piece of scrap steel, TWO 6 x 45mm bolts, 12 = 1/4" washers. Mine gets 'raised' about 9/16", and has survived OVER 170,000 miles among three V650s.

Iíll probably give the lowered pegs a shot, do they scrape easy? Itís that or highway pegs.

I had a bad interaction with motowerks trying to order highway pegs from them. Implying your customers are stupid for not reading something thatís apparently blatantly obvious (not shipping outside billing address, listed nowhere when buying with Apple Pay, nor in fine print) They were so rude I actually grabbed screenshots to show that I wasnít insane, it was listed nowhere after they insisted It was obvious on checkout. So unfortunately Iím not spending my money with them anytime soon.

Alternate source of them somewhere?

That seat fix looks like the trick to eliminate the downward slope not he stock seat.
