I often seem to be coming back from riding at the end of a day into the west with the sun blasting into my eyes. Despite having an internal drop down sun-shade visor in my modular helmut and wearing transition glasses it can still be not enough. I didnt want to go to a motocross style and I also have an open face helmut with a sun lid which I use sometimes on day rides with goggles. So I tried an experiment, painted a black strip on my internal drop down visor. Not too much, you dont want to black out traffic lights. This worked well, just enough to eliminate the setting sun, which in the northern hemisphere in the summer here can be strong and go on for a long time..
I've done the same thing on my Scorpion internal visor - a single row of electrical tape. There are still some times when I need more shade, but it's a great way to help block out that sun.
+1 for electrical tape. Goes on easy, comes off clean, survives water quite well. I have 2 slightly overlapped strips on the outside of my street and dual-sport shields
I put blue painters tape across the outside shield of my helmet. Put it down as low as needed and you can layer on top of it if needed to darken it. I take a clue from the race car drivers and at the end of each base layer strip I fold the left end back under itself. That way if conditions change I can just reach up, grab the end of the tape and yank it off. I try not to just let the piece go, but sometimes that happens. It is cheap, you can layer how much blocking you want and how far down. AND, it leaves no residue.
They used to put a tinted strip across the top of car windshields. I don't know why they stopped this practice. Blacking it out completely though, on a windshield or visor, makes it hard to see traffic lights hanging high up while waiting at an intersection.
When you remove it to replace the strip (after awhile they start coming loose), you need to remove 'tape residue', and I use Lemon Pledge for that.
