As promised here is my review of the Gorilla modular helmet I ordered last Friday.
Shipping & Packaging:
It just arrived this morning... I'm impressed as I just ordered late Friday afternoon and it is at my door early Monday morning. Upon opening the package I find that the helmet was shipped without extra packaging to protect it from Canada post's drop kick package sorting techniques. The helmet itself seems to be undamaged.
Finish & Construction:
The outer shell is constructed of abs and has a nice glossy appearance.
I find the outer shell to have significant flex to it. This may be normal as my experiences are limited to full face helmets. There also seems to be several items such as vent controls that have not had the injection mold flashing properly trimmed and are thus sharp to the touch. The liner and cheek pads are removable for washing. The inner sun visor operates smoothly and can be manipulated with gloves on. The main visor does not have any detents but does operate smoothly and has a very wide field of view. Both visors have a minor bit of curvature distortion but when compared to my Joe Rocket RKT Hybird’s shield are acceptable.
Fit & Comfort:
The fit on this helmet seems to run small side as does all made in China items. It is a round fit as opposed to an oval. I ordered a XL and I can press my chin against the chin bar enough to unlock it. Not reassuring at all
. Padding is minimal but I wasn’t expecting plush at this price point. I would suggest to anyone ordering one to order a size up from their normal size.
The venting is minimal as I would guess that they thought that if it was too hot you would just flip it up at low speeds. Unlike the inner sun visor the vent controls are difficult to operate with or without gloves. That being said … open or closed you won’t notice any difference.
One word “EARPLUGS” use them as you should in any helmet.
Value is subjective to each person. This helmet cost $50 and has some shortcomings vs. a $200 helmet.
Will it replace my RKT Hybird… No
Will it replace my HJC CL X5… No
Will it replace my Bell Arrow… No
Is there a place for it… Yes
If you need or want a flip up design helmet and can’t afford to spend a lot of cash or are just unwilling to part beau-coop dinero for a 2nd or 3rd or even a 4th helmet then this one may be for you. In my opinion this helmet at this price point would make a good back up or spare helmet for most people but if I wanted a cheap (under $100)
helmet and could only have or afford one I would probally still stick with my old Bell Arrow for $99
