OEM Oil Filter Part Number...

So I went to my local stealership (dealership) today to buy some oil and a filter. I decided with the Versys I'll keep using OEM stuff despite the higher price just because she is my baby. When I told the gentleman behind the counter I need a filter for a Kawasaki Versys, he said "A what!?!" I explained to him it's the same motor as a Kawasaki EX-650 and he pulled the part number and gave me an oil filter with part number 16097-0004. I just want to make sure this is what I am looking for before I peel the little piece of tape back and making it impossible for me to return it if I am wrong.

Yes that's the proper Versys oil filter part number. You can check it here by adding one to the parts list, then see the Kawasaki part number in the parts list...

There is an easiest way to check it. The PN is printed on the filter and you can read it. So simple!

Yeah, but the computer is closer than my Versys. Besides, I use a longer than OEM oil filter...

"KLE 650" is what worked at my local dealer. I switched to a K&N filter becuase it has a nut fitting on the end making it easier to torque to the requirement. I don't have the K&N P/N but it is easy to lookup on the K&N web site.

I get the same WHAT bike when i ask about a Versys part. Dealer sold the darn thing but they only sold one i think and the parts guys are not used to it yet. Same filter as my Ninja 650 R was. Had them check. Probably fits a lot of Kawasaki bikes. I just picked up the tall shield they orderded today and had the WHAT bike question. By the time i am done with them they will remember it. Two dealers here sat on the O8 and had trouble selling them. Such a good bike. Just not much recognition in this area. Mostly cruisers.

Thank you for all of the replies, I can now break the tape and actually use it.

I have the same problem here in South Dakota. I live in the largest city in the state and have only seen one other Versys. Either you ride a rocket or a harley, that's all they have around here.

The K&N part number is KN-303 or if you want chrome KN-303C.

Thanks, 303 is the same on my Secca yamamha also and was the same on my Vulcan 750. I used the K&N on the Secca once as it is really tight between the header pipes. Now i just use a strap wrench and is fine. May not be right but i have never torqued a filter in 40 years of cars and bikes. Just seem to know how far to turn. Had more filters from dealer changes that were so tight you could hardly get them loose at all with a filter wrench and a breaker bar when warm. Several way overtightened drain plugs that were so tight i don't know how they didn't strip them. Is the only reason i do it myself most of the time. Had one with a filter so loose oil had a 2' puddle the day i drove home. Answer was just bring it back in. Yeah right. I will say i do have a Kawasaki dealer now that seems to do a good job so at least for the warranty time i will let them change it maybe. I doubt if any dealer torques them. None i ever watched. My 2 cents.

Yea, stories like that are why I do my own work when I can, plus the fact I enjoy the work. I mostly push paper for work nowadays so it's good to open up the tool box again.

The oil change couldn't be easier than it is.

If you want to live dangerously, you could try the Wally World oil filter.

I'm on my 4 or 5th (part number ST7317 about $2.50) with no issues. I know there are dozens of others out there using the same filter.

There is a great thread (by Invader I think) with all the various short and long oil filters the fit the V. I used the 3.25" Purolator PL14610 -- $6.
