Default California model

I just discovered my 2011 model is a California version with the Evaporative Emissions Control System installed. I live in and bought the bike in North Carolina.

Questions:
Am I taking a hit in performance, mileage or anything at all?
Can I remove it?
If so, how?

Thanks!

I found out my '12 was as well (Oregon). I have decided to leave mine alone. It shouldn't affect performance as it just collects evaporating fuel and puts it back in the tank (as I understand, correct me if I'm wrong). My biggest concern was that I wouldn't be able to mount SW Motech crash bars, but it turned out I didn't even have to modify anything, just used the bar to kinda push canister out of the way.

Try "SEARCH". I removed the canister on my '09 (and posted about it) so I could squeeze more gas in.

Invader put me onto where to route the lines from the tank. I'll try to find my posts...

If you're asking me how I figured out it was a CA model, it was when someone on another forum with a bike identical to mine asked what that huge blob on the left side under the tank was.

Had never paid attention to it before - just assumed (Evap container) was on all models.
