There is a new found comet on its way named ISON. It'll be closest to the sun on November 28 2013, and has the potential to be one of the brightest and longest ever. It could be comparable to the Great Comet of 1680, which also got closer to the sun and was visible during daylight.
That would be awesome to watch! Just so it doesn't slam into earth. That would really mess us up!
Unlike some others I don't want the world to end. I live north of Yellowstone park and that thing is the biggest caldera in the world. Its always doin strange things.
ISON is an average sized comet at about 2 miles wide. Some can be over 30 miles wide, but ISON may be one of the brighest, and brighter than the moon (but won't emit as much light because it's smaller than the moon) because it will get much closer to the sun (750,000 miles). Its tail could be about 70 degrees long which is seen as seven fists wide at arm's length. That would rival the Great Comet of 1680, if it doesn't burn out.
You have a good point there. I read a book called the String Theory and how everything is connected. A lot of quantum physics and than it went into black holes and singularities, finally it blew my mind.
I popped out the other side of the book feeling very small!
It was discovered just before its closest approach to the Sun. It was not remarkable to many people, but I managed to see it next to the Valle Caldera National Preserve on a night with almost no moon. It was particularly spectacular. I will never forget what I saw that night (with my lovely wife). It spanned more than a third of the sky. Unfortunately, it was relatively dim and people with much light in their neighborhood saw very little of the comet.

If you enjoy looking into night sky come visit this mount John which is about 50 miles away from me. It is in a area that has been made the worlds largest dark sky reserve at 1600 square miles
I used to patrol Valle Grande and the upper canyons as a Park LE Ranger out of Bandelier many years ago. One of my clear memories was my n00b intro to night patrol there from a ranger who suddenly stopped the truck on Highway 4 at Valle Grande late at night and said "I'll be right back." I heard some clunking in the back of the truck, and turned around to see a huge fireworks rocket shoot up from behind the truck and arch out over the big meadow. He came back laughing and said I would remember my first patrol forever. He was right!

Not only the darkness, I would really like to spend some time looking at those "different" stars in the South. It will be a few years - at least until the youngest is 10 or so.

Of course now we would all be aghast since he might have started a fire. I am sure that you were there before "the big fire." State road 4 is a wonderful place to spend time looking at the stars. I imagine that people from distant parts of Canada can appreciate that. I would love some day to spend time there as well and see the "Northern lights."
