Default New Models from Honda

http://powersports.honda.com/

Big Red released the details on some new models for 2013. We knew the NC700X was coming, but check out the new 500cc models also being offered. Nice, practical bikes for the real-world. Impressed by them, but what is up with the Goldwing F6B? Wow, not really liking that one.

I think my favorite line in the description for the F6B is:

Perfect for around-town ...

Because everyone needs an 1800cc, 850 pound commuter bike!

Hey Capn, curious as to what you think of the CB500X. I know you are looking at the NC700X, but does this new 500 change any of your plans?

I like how the 500 says affordable and then has a price of TBD.

The goldwing would be a rocket with the weight loss and better corner carver as well. The goldwing is no slouch so the F6B would be amazing.

Wow...the CB1100 is the best of the lot from my perspective. I'd love one. It's even the right color. To each his own, I guess.

There is a certain segment of older riders who will only buy a big bike from Harley or a Gold Wing. It's kind of a blue collar status symbol. Kinda like my grandfather would only buy an Oldsmobile. This is meant to appeal to them.

I put about 60k on the first 1800 Wing. It is one hell of a nice ride. This F6B looks like it will be a lot of fun to ride. On the other hand, that CB1100 reminds me of my old 750cc Honda's.
I need a bigger garage and another paycheck.

I saw that and for a few minutes, I scratched my head. Everything is subject to change until I write the check though.

In short, I would not sell my Versys for a CB500X. Cool looking bike though! So far, my early impressions are that the CB500X would be fun (I tend to like smaller bikes). It also has no Frunk (Front-trunk) - I didn't make up that name, someone on the NC forum came up with that. Supposedly (I have not verified) that the 500 has a bit more HP and 50 pounds lighter but it is a different machine. The 500 has a normal parallel twin like the V unlike the NC engine (1/2 car engine). The 500 will rev high, the 700 does not. They are completely different designs even though they look very similar on the outside. I have a hunch the 500 will not be as smooth of a ride as the NC.

For a second bike in the stable - what would get my fancy going would be for Honda or Kawasaki to come out with a fuel injected 250cc motard.. I almost bought a KLX250SF but talked myself out of it because I made a pack with myself not to buy another carb'ed bike. I just hate the cold starts and several minute warmups before heading out. I start my bikes, suit up and go. I don't want to spend time revving and waiting. I know Yamaha has a FI motard but I refuse to pay $6,500+ for a 250cc. I would use the 250 for an in town scoot. Lighter to roll out of the garage for a quick trip through town. I am in the minority in the fact that I can find fun in the 250cc bikes. Everyone I know considers them underpowered beginner bikes....

I completely agree with you. The 500X is a nice bike, but not one to trade the Versys for. IMHO, the new 500cc bikes may not be for everyone, but I do think they are going to help bring some new riders to the sport. If that does prove to be the case, that is a good thing for everyone. They seem to be reasonably spec’d and reasonably priced, and they offer some of the variety Honda used to offer back in the day. Remember when you could go to a Honda dealer and there were 500cc Shadow, Magnas, and Ascots lined up next to each other? Buyers had options and those options didn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Here's my CB 750 story and I'm sticking to it.

1978. I am on my 3rd street bike a Honda Hawk II 400. Nice bike a twin. My brother drives his CB 750 from Yuma AZ all the way to Wisconsin. He was in the Navy didn't want to leave it in AZ for 6 months as he was going on a cruise. Put two new tires on it here in WI told his little brother (me) to "keep an eye on her and take it around the block a few times to keep her lubed".

Oh my dog. The fun I had on that bike for 6 WHOLE MONTHS. That thing had a Kerker and I was top dog in this one horse town. Nobody could touch me. There were a couple Kawi KZ's around that could beat me but those guys were not very good riders. They never whipped me. All they would see was my tailight. A spirited shift into 2nd would light that rear tire up like it spinning on hot butter.

Alas when brother got home from his cruise his only words were "you owe me a new rear tire" and he said it with a twinkle in his eye.

He knew the fun I had. It was glorious. Dats why I need to buy one of these.

Nice story, siyeh. On a related note, are you still liking your Phantom?

Yes, until I saw Honda was finally bringing this over. The Phantom is gonna hit the road in April.

I just did a quick tally in my head. Since 2002 I have gone through 7 bikes. It is a disease my wife says. I have no emotional connection to motorcycles. That not their job. Their job is to get me from point A to point B. My passion is to ride ride ride not THE ride. Does that make sense? Just what I ride makes no difference to me. My bikes are tools-nothing more nothing less.

This new Honda looks cool, and as long as I have the money secured, I will buy it. Chances are great in 2-3 years, or less, something else will be parked in the garage. The new CRF250L in the garage is a keeper. I gonna ride that lil thumper into the ground!
