Why don't you strap the tent to the seat?
No need to put weight up high when you have alternative.
Also put the heaviest stuff in the bottom of the side cases and the light stuff like sleeping bag, clothes etc. in the top box.
Don't worry about the weight. You won't know it's there.
May think about that as clothe's/sleeping bag/self inflating air mattres is in the panniers and in top box is a bottle of apple cider, bottle of water, some tinned food, plate cup etc. May take the cider and tins out as i can still fit them in the panniers, i do like to have a bit of room in top box to put gear if it warms up but highly unlikely. My rain suit is in top box to but it is handy there.
Ivan i put the tent on the rack on the top box so as the lid would still open right up but may try it where you suggested as would be better lower down.
Took off from home town of Timaru with 3 other bikes.
First stop
Looked what i spotted across the road at first stop, a 07 orange Versys, mines 08.
On the road to our unit, this road is called the pig route

Our camp for friday night
Time to go to pub early for evening meal and refreshments
It was a cold but fine day with temps not getting above 10 C at mid day but considering its 3 weeks to shortest day it was good enough for a winter ride.
We had only a short ride to camp site sat morn, about 40 km, was a really cold ride as day started with minus 3 C
Our camp site
The other versys i found from the day before which was parked just across from our campsite.
A big jump but did not take versys over it
The lovely long drop toilets in the background
Preparing the country's biggest bonfire with waste oil being poured on wood.

I always at these rallies go on the hunt to find the two bikes i own, found one Ninja 1000 but my friends found 3 more. Only found one versys but at least it was the fastest colour burnt orange.
A burnout war between a m109 and a harley
Was woken up by fire crews going around at 3.30 am putting out all the fire drums so took a picture of the full moon, not sure why.
Woke up to a frosty morning in Wanaka, we decided to not leave until 10am check out time to give the frost time to go off but we still rode a lot slower than usual as some of the roads on the way home did not get much sun and there is always danger of black ice.
Stopped at top of lindis pass to warm up, it looked funny as it was so cold coming up the pass that we shared some heat from my mates Z750 hotgrips to warm our hands up, the frost was still to the edge of the road in a lot places at midday.
Omarama for lunch
my mate Jason not having a good run as his rear tyre wearing badly ( dunlop sportsmax)and his boot also not good.
Good chance I am going to Koh Samui in Thailand this July, with some 30 other bikers.
Would of loved to ride into Thailand with you, maybe next year. Leslie maybe next year you come for a winter hoilday and go on brass monkey and camp out in a tent, somtimes they have snow there and the water freezes over the small lake so you can do ice curling. Bring warm gear as its a bit colder than Penang.
Good job kiwi,Makin some awesome memories and friends!..This is the V life!.....
It was a great trip, A few of those roads we road on are now closed due to a weather bomb going over the country dropping a lot of snow, all the low hills around where i live are now covered in snow. It would of been a nightmare to ride now.
