: RhodeIsland ride
madmonkey 07-20-2010, 11:36 AM Hey guys,
Are there any CT riders that would like to meet up and go for a blast down to RI or wherever? We could stay in Ct or go to any of the neighboring states, as long as it's a one day ride...
glowcat13 07-20-2010, 07:30 PM I am keeping an eye on this post to see what develops, sounds like A possibilty.
ian_ct 07-20-2010, 08:12 PM Definitely would be interested. If it is a weekend I don't have my kids I would be up for it.:thumb:
madmonkey 07-21-2010, 11:10 AM I would like to go on a weekend, Saturday if possible- but thats totally flexible. Any body have a hard date in mind? I'll be available every Sat from August 14th going forward.
glowcat13 07-25-2010, 12:22 AM I would be interested in stopping at the twisted throttle showroom in Rhodeisland, if this doesn't interest you its no big deal, cause I can go there some other time.

Thats fine, we can make it a destination point if you'd like. From there, cruise to the beaches and grab a bite and motor on. I'm open to suggestion...
glowcat13 07-25-2010, 08:29 AM madmonkey where abouts in ct. are you from? I saw twisted throttles location on map quest and it looks like they aren't to far from the ocean.

I'm near Willimantic, CT; really not far from RI... Twisted Throttle is (according to google...) 47 miles from my neck of the woods. I'm all for it. Maybe some other guys will jump in too and we can set a firm date...Saturday preferably.
ian_ct 07-25-2010, 10:01 AM That sounds like great. Twisted Throttle already has a large sum of my money but it would be fun to check them out anyway. :) Dates that I could go on, would be 8/7, 8/21 or 9/1.

8/21 works for me as well, we should set up a meeting location...
glowcat13 07-25-2010, 07:20 PM I should be good for 8/21 as well.

its about a 5 minute (if that) ride from TT to narragansett beach, 10 mins to scarborough.
brothercannon 07-26-2010, 07:32 AM Maybe I'm a tad crazy but I'm interested in this ride. It's roughly 300 miles for me to get to TT. It's doable but I don't know how much I'd enjoy myself.

Come visit! We might even have some goodies to test on your bike. We just developed a bunch of stuff for the 2010 Versys, and we need some good-hearted soul to stop by so we can see if it'll also fit a 2007-2009...

massconn72 07-27-2010, 08:23 AM Glowcat13, I just had to ask, where in MA are you?
glowcat13 07-27-2010, 09:42 AM the town of ware
madmonkey 07-27-2010, 11:33 AM It sounds like it's firming up for a nice ride. Question is where and when do you guys want to meet? What would be a good spot to meet-up? Here's a suggestion...
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=north+franklin+ct&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=North+Franklin,+CT&gl=us&ei=ZwpPTJjhBMqgnQef_bTCBw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CAsQ8gEwAA
Lets here from others...
glowcat13 07-27-2010, 07:08 PM i can take 32 all the way, I live on route 32 in Mass so makes it real easy for me. just need A time. Madmonkey is that your house at that crossroads?
ian_ct 07-27-2010, 07:22 PM I'd be coming from Farmington so I thinking I would take route 2. Is there parking lot, what should I be looking out for?

Nope! Thats actually a gas station. It's about 10 miles from where I live. I figure from there we could take 138 all the way into Peace Dale.
Here is the real map...Sorry guys I put the wrong starting location up...! I a little slow sometime...

Actually I believe RT 2 dumps you just up the street from that intersection in North Franklin. A nicer ride would be get off in Colchester (exit 17) go through town, left on 16, right on 207, right on 87 and that will bring you down there. I can meet you in the center of Colchester if you'd like.
ian_ct 07-27-2010, 07:41 PM To answer Glowcat's question, would a good time be 9:30 - 10? To early, to late?
madmonkey 07-27-2010, 07:53 PM To answer Glowcat's question, would a good time be 9:30 - 10? To early, to late?
9:30 is a good time. It's not a terribly long ride to RI from there. That'll put us over there at a good time.
brothercannon 07-27-2010, 08:21 PM I'm still watching this thread but I don't want to have much influence on the plans because there is a good chance I'll be a no show. Does anyone have a suggestion for a restaurant with some good chow?
glowcat13 07-27-2010, 08:53 PM is the idea to meet at that getty gas station? not sure if I will be there at exactly 9:30 but would between 9:30 and 10:00.

what kind of stuff are you looking for for food? aunt carries and iggy's have great chowder and clam cakes (which i can not wait to engorge myself upon when i get back to the US/RI) both down near point judith. theres always kingston pizza, which i love. if you go to URI which is over there theres caliente, which was voted as the best mexican food in RI. and theres a ton of nicer places as well.

That all sounds good, as long as there's some fried shrimp somewhere in there, i'm all in!

Basically no chain restaurants for me.
fineout 07-29-2010, 04:23 AM Island deli is great as well, down by the beaches, they have great sandwiches there.
fosterit 08-05-2010, 03:38 PM Hi guys. I'm thinking about getting in on this ride too. I haven't been down to TT in two years, and I've never ridden with any other Versys riders!
Just to be clear on the meet up spot, it's a Getty gas station at the corner of CT Route's 87 and 32, right? I'm coming down from Foster, RI, so I'll probably take Rt 6 to 169 south, then hop on 395 or take 138/207 to get over there.
I don't want anyone to wait for me so I'll post one more time prior to the 21st to confirm that I can make it (kids, etc, make it hard to commit). Thanks! :thumb:

Hey Fosterit,
I was thinking after we left the Getty station in CT, hop on 395 for a short period and then shoot over on 138. Does that sound like a good road to take to TT? If so, why dont we meet you along the way on 138 so you dont have to ride out here to just turn around? Just a thought...
fosterit 08-06-2010, 02:16 PM I actually don't know the 'south county' area of RI all that well, I grew up on the MA/RI border in the Southeast corner of the state, but it looks to me like 138 is the best option from that area of CT, unless we really want try some back roads.
As for meeting on 138 somewhere, I appreciate the offer but I'll just meet you guys at the Getty station. That way we only have to do intro's at one place, I don't want to drag out the 'meet-up' time for everyone. Besides, it's really not that much back-tracking for me, I'll take some back roads from 169 to the meet-up spot to keep it interesting.
I haven't gotten out for much joy riding this year, so I'm excited for this ride!
madmonkey 08-06-2010, 02:44 PM Ok, that sounds good. Lets hope we get a nice sunny non humid day!
glowcat13 08-06-2010, 06:08 PM Looking forward to this ride as well. :thumb:
glowcat13 08-13-2010, 07:37 AM when we go to TT I plan on either upgrading to A larger topcase, currently have the kawasaki one, or adding saddle bags. I have to check them out to see which way to go. these are my likely choices, the 45 liter topcase or the soft bags pictured. Not sure if I should leave my current topcase at home or not.
fosterit 08-13-2010, 09:59 AM unless you really need the box for the trip, I'd leave it home. That gives you more options :)
FYI, I have set of Cortech soft saddle bags, and I was disappointed in the durability. I did leave them on ALL-THE-TIME for a summer of riding (which I commuted pretty much every day) and by the end of that year they were faded and tearing and generally ratty looking.
I actually have them on the bike now for a trip up through NH and VT this weekend, and I'm still able to use them, but I feel like they are more for occasional use. After that summer I picked up a JC Whitney top box, and took off the bags. The top box has held up great since then. YMMV!
madmonkey 08-13-2010, 02:49 PM I went with the Shad S29. It is on the smallish side and looks better on the bike, imho. The best feature is the integrated back rest so my wife feels secure when I slam the throttle on!
glowcat13 08-13-2010, 09:55 PM yea the kawasaki accesories top case is 29 liters, no back rest though. I have not had any passengers though. I could use more storage, thinking of getting some rain gear and would like a place to keep it. My helmet pretty much fills my current case.
madmonkey 08-15-2010, 11:47 AM Ok fellas, it's looking good for Saturday, if you can believe this http://www.weather.com/weather/wxdetail/USRI0048?dayNum=6

brothercannon 08-22-2010, 11:32 AM I had a great time yesterday. It was nice to meet everyone and the ride was cool. I don't think I was ever in RI before and certainly not on a bike.
After my 600+ mile ride I'm seriously thinking about replacing the stock seat. Towards the end of the ride I was taking breaks more often.
Here's my pictures from the trip.

On a side note, is it just me or does Ian bare a striking resemblance to Daniel Craig?

If anyone wants to go for a leaf peeping tour up my I'm game.
Glowcat13, the top box is looking nice. I see you grabbed a TT sticker. Somehow I missed them and didn't get one.

brothercannon 08-25-2010, 08:04 PM Somewhere along the way on the trip my VT state inspection sticker came off. I had noticed flapping in the wind a few days prior. I meant to tape it down but never got around to it.
