I bought an oil filter wrench for the Versys today at Walmart. It only cost $3.26 and fits over the outside of the filter's end like a socket. You the put your 3/8 drive ratchet into opening of the device and spin the filter off. It's made in the USA by IMPERIAL, part no. IF-6567C.

Nevermind. I found it on page 100 of the owners manual:

13 ft lbs for the filter

22 ft lbs for the drain plug

I got lucky today. My sister had a mid-90's Toyota Cellica while in college and I still had the wrench for it. Sure enough, it fits the Versys oil filter as well!

speaking of oil filters, does anyone have any cross references for other brands i might get at my local auto parts store instead of dealing with just the dealership part?

K&N makes one that I just installed. It has a nut attached to the front of the filter and installing it was a snap. The part number is KN-303.

OEM oil filter: 20 x 1.5mm threads, 14 psi by-pass valve, anti-drain back valve, 2.3" O.D. gasket, 2.5" height, 2.7" OD. If you have the room, I recommend the longer filters.

I bought the wrench from Wall Mart and it works on the Fram filter but not the oem filter? Maybe its not the same.:confused:

I can confirm that the current Wal Mart cheap wrench doesn't work on the oem. I think it is a Fram branded wrench.

Mine is a Fram oil filter wrench, F1105. It fits the Fram filter not the Kawi OEM

The Walmart wrench worked on my OEM filter after I wrapped some masking tape around the filter. The OEM was installed exceedingly tight, IMHO. I applied torque to the old filter very slowly, and it finally started to move.

I started torquing the new filter to spec with a calibrated wrench. and I stopped short of the recommended spec, it seemed way too tight to me.

So my Supertech filter is installed by feel, and no leaks in 700 miles.

Install filters by feel rather than toque as dismantling becomes a problem. Have done several chnages on oil filters on bike and car , all on feel. So far no visible leakage and good.

MOST of the filters I do (car...) say to tighten till contact, then another 3/4 turn. I would NOT use a torque wrench on one. :thumbdown:

I understand using a filter wrench for unscrewing, but I've ALWAYS tightened my oil filters by hand (with maybe a tiny bit extra force with the wrench)--and I've had no problems so far.
