I have different gloves for different riding conditions:

1) Road Gear mesh gloves for the very hot.
2) Held Profi gloves are my everyday glove. I use them in temps from about 50 to 80.
3) Road Gear H20 gloves for the rain and temps below 50 but above 30.
4) Gerbing heated gloves for anything below 30.

If I have to have ONE pair of gloves though it would be my Helds.

As I am only a Noob I have only collected two pairs so far - a lighter weight, part mesh / part leather with carbon fiber knuckles. I bought these during my riding course as the ones provided were so big and bulky. These are also only wrist length, so allow some wind up my sleeve if I have the cuffs of the riding jacket not clinched down.

I like the 'feel' of those gloves and they are my daily use ones at this time of the year.

I also have a pair of all leather gauntlets that are thicker and (supposedly) 'waterproof'. The jacket cuff goes inside the gauntlet so it is warmer and no rain gets up the sleeve. I always carry these in the side pannier in case the weather changes.

By the sounds of it you have come across the term ATGATT = All the Gear, All the Time. Too many accidents happen close to home / I am only going to XXX for YYY.

:goodluck: in your choices.

Had a few gloves. Last was Held.
After that tried motocross gloves and loved it. Cool and max protection. Meant for summer which is whole year long here.

to each his own, but i'll answer the questions before they're posted...

gloves are worn to provide a few things... protection from the weather (hot, cold, wet)... grip on the controls when your hands get sweaty... protection from impact and abrasion in a crash. riding gloves vary in how much of each they provide. riding gloves are vary in the quality of their retention systems.

- the bicycle gloves will provide grip when your hands get sweaty (fingerless, so more on the grips, less so on the levers), but no protection in a crash. good for keeping hands cool in the heat, but not good for much else.

- the work gloves do basically the same, with better comfort at lower temps. but depending upon the glove, there may not be a retention system so it may not remain on the hands during a crash. hence they cannot be trusted to protect while you're tumbling and sliding down the road. also, impact protection is probably lacking.

- also, while i'm preaching, motocross gloves are built to crash on dirt and may not hold up to concrete, depending upon construction.

jmho.

i imagined my life with my hand (ankle) in a cast before i sprung for my first pair of top shelf moto-specific gloves (boots).

Being a Certified Gear Whore (CGW ;)), I have been collecting gloves. My favorites are my Held Thrux full gauntlet model, though I usually use the Held Namib short glove every day. Have 2 cold weather gloves, an Alpinestar Apex Drystar and a Held Iceberg. For real warm weather, I usually use my Alpinestar Sledge gloves, which while perforated are leather and have fair knuckle protection as well. For wet weather I just got a Tourmaster Dritech glove which was reviewed at Webike World recently. Haven't tried them in wet weather yet, but for about $33, keeping a pair in my tailbag isn't too much of a stretch...

For the summer, I use a pair of shorty Alpinestars gloves. Can't find them on the site anymore, but they have armour on the nuts, and are held together in the back by 1 snap. The work well, and my hands don't overheat

I like CyclePort Kevlar gloves. In the winter, I use a glove liner. I like the protection, and they filter out some vibration.

I use the Icon Twenty-Niner gloves and really like them

But then again, they're the only pair of gloves I've ever worn on a motorcycle so I've got no comparisons!

Being a Certified Gear Whore (CGW ;)),

Hey, you're my long lost brother from a different mother. I too am from the clan CGW! :thumb:

I had the Olympia Kevlar gauntlet, until it fell apart after two years, mostly from SoCal sweat.:( I then got a pair of Dainese racing gauntlets. Great gloves and great fit. I then discovered electric heat :loveeyes:and started to wear the Warm'nSafe heated gauntlets. Those worked really well throughout the winter months in SoCal. They were actually too hot at times and I had to dial them down. I'm now wearing the Motoport/Cycleport Kevlar gauntlets. For most of the year, they cannot be beat because there is no leather to rot away, and I just soak them in water to wash out all the sweat. For the summer, I sometimes just wet them before a ride, and I get cool hands as they dry while underway.

TCX gel gloves. Cool when it's hot and the gel grip easier on vibes.
Leather with thinsulate when it's cold. Both sets of gloves were less than 25$ each at the dealership.

Kevrider,

Yeh, what you said.

I don't know if anyone else here has had the thrill of sliding down the road at 40 mph, but I have.

I can tell you that Levi's aren't really going to save your ass (figuratively or literally), long sleeves - even in the summer - are an absolute must, and a good, full-face helmet and real motorcycle gloves can save you a LOT of grief.

If I'd been wearing fingerless gloves, I'd have ground off a couple of digits. The thick palm pad and knuckle nubs on my gloves took some of the abuse.

The helmet took most of the rest.

It's pretty hard to get by with one pair of gloves. Gauntlets are nice to protect your wrist. Armor is nice to protect your hand and side of hand. Heavy reinforcement on base of hand. Some textile gloves don't look very protective to me. Avoid the temptation to buy $30 gloves, you'll need to spend more to get decent quality and performance.

I've been with the Icon brand for about 5 years now...they wear-out just like the rest. I have short gloves for warm & gauntlet for cold....
most gloves have too many velcro straps & such that I cut off...
whatever you do try them with the jacket you plan on wearing before you buy if possible
