I am thinking about buying this helmet - they are on sale for about $300 - anyone in the forum wear one? And if so, would you recommend it? TNX

I've got both the RF-1000, and RF-1100 (the 1100 is new, and haven't had a chance to ride with it yet.) The RF-1000 is a great fit for me, but I still need earplugs for wind noise. But I'm really picky... Great Helmet. You should be able to get one cheaper that $300, I paid $330 shipped for my (White) RF-1100.

it is a good fit....in any case, sitting high up on the V - I still wear ear plugs. My only complaint is it gets foggy very easily.... atleast mine does.... dont quite know what to do to fix that!

For $300 you might be buying NOISE & FOGGY SHIELD, so be careful on your selection. Sometimes cheap one are far better then the expensive and branded one. I am living with one-Caberg, very noise and paid about $300++

Just take your time and do a lot of search.

Are you buying it from a motorcycle shop or online?

Will they let you try it? Take a quick spin on the bike with it? If you're going to spend 300+ on a helmet, then it seems reasonable that they can let you try it out for a quick spin.

I have one. It's a great helmet, only thing I would have liked is the fully removable liner.

I have one and really like it.

If it fits right, go for it. Shoei makes a great helmet in my experience thus far. I like mine quite a bit, though it might be a bit on the round side for my head. You can probably find solid colors for less than $300, but lots of vendors only have a few sizes remaining.

As 80watt said, Shoei's fit rounder heads. Be very careful, try on a bunch of different brands of helmets to find one that fits comfortably, or you can easily waste your money. But maybe you already know this. I always wear earplugs, so noise isn't an issue for me. Buffeting is resolved by the placement of the windscreen on my Madstad bracket.

yes and I love it. Since I wear glasses, the pads in the SHoei have a eye glass depression. Putting on the specs is as easy as pie.

Love the helmet

Had one for two years, I'll buy another one when it's time.

The RF-1000 seems to fit a rounder head than the RF-1100. That's just for my head.
I have the RF-1000, and it was difficult to put on compared to the RF-900 (and earlier). The bottom openning is more narrow. But once on, it fits very snug.
Now, I have a problem with the RF-1100. Once on, I developed hot spots on the rear corners of the head in 2 minutes.
For those with both RF-1000 and RF-1100, did you have the same issuie? Or did I just put on an 'off' unit?

I did not, and you bring up a good point that different helmets fit different beans. I bought the RF1000 because it fit me the best out of al lot of helmets I tried on. AND it was DOT and snell rated.

I tried on the 1000 and 1100 today; same size Large...

1000 was snug all around
1100 seemed to have ear pockets and was very comfortable as well. Suprisingly they show the Large for 7/3/8 to 7 1/2 and I wear a 7 1/4 cap - but I would not go to the medium.

Went to the moto shop and they were asking $140 to 160 MORE than online stores...I understand a mark up for service and carrying inventory but that comes to a 40 to 50% increase over online prices...

I have a 1000 and really like it. My complaints would be as others have stated...no removable liner and the shield fogs easily (a Pinlock shield helps a lot). If it fits you well they are reat helmets...you can get shields just about anywhere. Mine was getting a little beat up so I bought myself an X-12 for my birthday...really quiet, no problem with the shield fogging and a removable lining.

Don't have an RF1000, but found a great deal on an X-11 at $299 at New Enough (I think they ran out). Used to have the X-Tec and ZII model Shoei's until I went to an AGV Stealth for a bit. Still have the AGV and will most likely use it in the bad weather, but the difference between the AGV and the Shoei is like night and day. I love the X-11. Comfortable, quieter than my Stealth, the venting is super and the fit/finish are amazing. I guess you get what you pay for and I am going to pay for a Shoei from now on. Worth every penny...:thumb:

I was about to say the same as above, I think all that is left at that price is the odd sizes. 2X Small, etc.

I am either going to buy the Shoei RF1100 or the Arai RX-Q. You can buy the Shoei RF1100 solid color variety for $313 (shipped) from Competition Accessories http://www.compacc.com. This is one of the best prices I've seen. :topsecret:

ps. RF1000 can be had for $269-$279 (free shipping) from same site with colors/sizes a function of inventory.

Tried the RF1100 and it didn't fit me very well. The Hornet DS did so I went with that one. Once the liner broke in to fit my head a bit it is very comfortable and noise isn't horrible.

You definitely need to go try helmets on in a shop somewhere to find what fits. I was all set to go Arai until I realized that most of their models that I was interested in didn't fit me. The only one that did was near $900, go figure. ;)

I have the RF-1000 and really love it. I also wear earplugs when riding, but since I got the Givi windscreen, it is not as bad as before. The helmet is very comfortable, but there is a fogging issue. Mostly when it is in the 50's and below. once you get up to speed, you will be ok. and for some reason, wearing the chin curtain seems to help with the fogging when it is cold. It is significantly lighter then my other previous helmets. so for me, I get less rider fatigue. I do a lot of highway riding.

I also had an RF1000 until it met pavement (with my protected head in it). It has now been sent back to Shoei for inspection (wasn't a hard hit)

I came from a HJC CL-SP - the rf1000 was lots and lots better in all ways. Ive got a Shark RSR2 as a replacement helmet, and I wish I'd grabbed another RF1000.

The RF isn't perfect - It fogs very easily and It lifts when your speed and the cross winds meet (occasional problem)

When the finances are in order, I will buy another rf, but an rf1100 for sure.

When my GF bought her helmet at Cycle Gear they had a 7 day return policy. Might be good to check if they still do.

Read their return policy on helmets carefully. "In order to protect our customers, helmets exchanged under this program may not be ridden in, dirty, scuffed, chipped or damaged in any way."

I had a RF-900 for 5 years, and loved it. Good fit, although it fogged easily in the pre-dawn commute. Noise was never an issue, since I wear earplugs. I replaced it this spring with a RF-1100. Same fit as the 900, seemed like the 1000 was shorter (felt like my jaw and chin stuck out below the helmet.) The 1100 vents better than the 900, is quieter, but still fogs slightly. Nowhere near as bad as the 900, but it does fog in temps below 50 degrees.

As others have said, go to local places and try the fit before you order. When it comes to helmets, very few aren't DOT, Snell, or some other agency standard compliant. But it has to fit you properly to do it's job.

I got my rf-1100 (metallic silver) for $356 brand new (incl tax!) 6 weeks ago. I think the guy was trying to get me to buy my bike there so he gave me a great deal on the helmet (retails for $419). It's a great helmet.

I am thinking of going with Carbon Fiber next time. The prices are in the same range as the Shoei, and Arai is out of sight. A pound of weight is a bunch on a helmet, and the reviews are good on some of them. Check my Helmet weight thread for individual weights.

I have a Shoei RF-1000 (Flutter 2 TC-9).

Check out Dennis Kirk (http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?skuId=3303187XL&store=null&catId=&productId=prod2170001&leafCatId=&mmyId=).

I put the breath guard in and used to have to crack the shield with the flippy thing on the side; this made it really noisy inside. Then I picked up an antifog insert (about $20). Love it!

One of the benefits of conducting helmet reviews is the ability to compare many different brands and models against each other.
