: North Georgia Ride?
antman325 05-18-2010, 11:00 PM Ok Ga riders...I see how many of us are on here now, we need to have a Versys get together and ride. I'm talkin early morning coffee, t-shirts(we could get some made cheap I'm sure) and twisties twisties twisties! We can make it a day long ride that gets us back home by dusk. It would be awesome to meet everybody as we share a common bond of owning the funnest little bike on the planet! I propose a day in mid late June...that gives time to get shirts made. What do you guys think?
sharrison56 05-19-2010, 06:00 AM That would be awesome, when do you want to do it? We sure have plenty of Vs in the area!
mudarra 05-19-2010, 08:46 AM June is great! I have no rides planned for June.
Vendetta 05-19-2010, 08:53 AM Yes, I’m in. How about Saturday, June 26. We can meet somewhere on GA400…
Vendetta 05-19-2010, 09:02 AM How about we meet here for breakfast:
Atlanta Bread Co
908 Buford Rd
Cumming, GA 30041-2718

There are also 2 gas stations across the street.
sharrison56 05-19-2010, 12:08 PM I think that will work for me too!
BamaVersys 05-19-2010, 01:04 PM Wow! You guys are close enough I may have to think about riding with you, if you don't mind the next door neighbor tagging along! My brother used to live in Dahlonega, great riding up there!

Saturday June 26th sounds GREAT to me...I'll be there for sure. We'll get some coffee and breakfast and head on up. Anybody ever take hwy 9 to get to Dahlonega? That's a fun ride. Just everybody treat your wives and girlfriends/boyfriends really good so when ride day comes we can all be out with no time pressure! :thumb: As far as the shirts, what do you guys think about getting this image put on the back with the words KawasakiVersys.com on the front (small wording in the shirt pocket area even though these will be T's w/no pocket). I may just order a bunch in X and XX large. Those sizes fit most don't they? Color options will be black or white...keep it simple!
We also need to decide on a route. I could do the Cherohala Skyway http://www.cherohala.org/motorcycles2.html as it still feels like Disneyworld on a bike...truly one of the best roads in the world! Or we could stay local if you guys want. I for one vote for Cherohala.

Please come along if you can...the more the merrier! I'd love to see at least 10 of us there. Mark Sat June 26 on your calander Bama!
sharrison56 05-20-2010, 06:43 AM Here is the group we had last June at the first overlook on the Cherohala!!! Altough I think we had one straggler that wasn't in this pic.

Nice ride but where was I dammitt! Are those all forum guys too? If so lets do it again!
Vendetta 05-20-2010, 03:46 PM Stay Saturday night here?
cycleresort.com (http://www.cycleresort.com/index.html)
antman325 05-20-2010, 09:43 PM I'm all in! Who else and lets book it?
Vendetta 05-21-2010, 08:31 AM Already submitted my shore leave paperwork to my CW (that’s Commanding Wife) and a Form I-95 was returned granting leave for the requested period. :joke:
Now to business… I think we need to make reservations ASAP. How about a quick headcount of who is going so a call to reserve the cabin(s) can be made?
Another option is camping, but that will require bringing more gear.
Bad-Tat 05-21-2010, 05:45 PM Ga ride is a great idea! Can't make the 26th, but the 19th would work!
antman325 05-21-2010, 10:57 PM I'm in for the 19th or 26th but camping is out for me. I'll want a room of some kind if we do the over night thing.
Vendetta 05-22-2010, 01:02 AM 19 or 26 is OK with me. Same here I dont want to camp... We need to make reservations ASAP.
sharrison56 05-22-2010, 08:20 AM I think the 19th or 26th works for me too.

The only problem with the Cherohala Motorcycle resort is that they have a two night minimum on weekends, but it is really well maintained.

Hum, didn't know that. Do you know of other decent place in the area where we can stay? I found these hotels LINK (http://www.hotels.com/search.do?searchParams.arrivalDate=06-19-10&pointName&queryFormState=CLOSED&searchParams.priceFilterCurrencyCode=USD&searchParams.distance=25.0&fromHotelDetails=false&searchParams.sortOrder=BEST_SELLER&children[0]=0&searchViewType=MAP&searchParams.rooms[0].numberOfAdults=2&page=1&dayInMonthCheckIn=19&fromDisambiguation=false&monthCheckIn=6&dayInMonthCheckOut=20&lat=0.0&rooms=1&searchParams.departureDate=06-20-10&lon=0.0&searchParams.resolvedLocation=destination:1636005: PROVIDED:PROVIDED&monthCheckOut=6&destination=Etowah,+Tennessee,+United+States&showSimilarDestinations=true&fromLandmark=false&asaReport=HomePage::City&destinationId=1636005&destinationForLandmark&activeTab=DESTINATION) in the area close to the Cherohala Motorcycle Resort. Any suggestions?

sharrison56 05-22-2010, 05:08 PM I have stayed here and it is might work depending on the size of the group. http://www.tellicologcabins.com/cabins.htm
I have also stayed here and it is nice. http://lodgeattellico.com/
The trick will be finding enough double rooms for people that want to share.
Hunt's might work. It is right on 68. http://www.huntslodge.com/
Hog Heaven is another one, but I am not sure when they open for the season. http://www.hogheavenresort.com/
oldkawboy 05-22-2010, 09:03 PM We're planning on being home the end of June so I'll be there!
Look forward to meeting you guys.
Dan
antman325 05-22-2010, 09:30 PM So far I'm seeing Sharrison, Vendetta, Bad-tat, Bama(maybe), Oldkawboy, and myself. Is it the 26th or 19th? Once we get a confirmed headcount and date we can figure out where we're staying.
Vendetta 05-23-2010, 01:06 PM I vote for the 19 since it looks like more riders are available.
mudarra 05-23-2010, 06:12 PM I have also stayed here and it is nice. http://lodgeattellico.com/
Stayed here with a large group back in October. Best place for a bike group that doesn't want to camp IMO. Plus they have a garage for bikes, and a restaurant.

I stayed here in February on a driving trip and really enjoyed it. The restaurant will let you bring your own beer...I don't think that they sell beer.
antman325 05-23-2010, 10:19 PM I'll do the 19th as well, Lodge at Telico looks awesome and good rates too. I'll call about rooms on Monday. How many do we need? 2 per room work or no?
BamaVersys 05-24-2010, 08:20 AM Hey all, looks like I will have to join you on the next ride. My daughter is getting married on the 19th, so I better hang around for it! You ride safe and will look forward to the ride pics and reports.
Vendetta 05-24-2010, 08:47 AM This is only a suggested rout!!!
OK, with the mandatory disclaimer out of the way, here is a rout that I think would be very cool ride. It included some historic sights, some river-crossings, some highways and lots of curves. Total ride time is 5:05 as per the Big G.

I love this route! I have been on these roads before and know we are going to have a ball! As far as rooms go, we need to book them now. The guy at the lodge said he only has openings for the weekend of the 19th...4 basic rooms and 3 deluxe are available. Basics have a king size bed and a pull out sofa bed, and deluxe have king and a twin. 2 to a room should be no prob. I was in the Army for a while so it's fine with me. I'll take a sofa. So I will book a room and one of you guys do the same. That will take care of 4 of us.
antman325 05-24-2010, 12:27 PM OK I just booked cabin #203 which is a deluxe cabin with parking garage. It is the one with the king and twin beds. He said #204 right next door is open for now so you guys need to hop on it. The total with taxes was $97 and some change ($85+taxes). There are also a few basic rooms left. Lets do this fellas!

Sorry we'll miss you Bama. As a father of three daughters, I'll be in your shoes with weddings soon enough! Have a great wedding day and let's hopefully do a ride one day.
Vendetta 05-24-2010, 12:33 PM I can book the other room. Can you send me a Private Message with the phone number?

I think sharrison56 is going to stay with antman325.
antman325 05-24-2010, 12:54 PM Cool!!! Looks like me and Sharrison are gonna be roomies. Is someone able to share your room Vendetta? If so, that person needs to speak up, or forever hold your peace. Plus it reduces the cost of the room to each person, $48.50 per. Very reasonable for such quality lodging so close to some of the best roads in the world! CAN'T WAIT!!! :D

Vendetta that is a thing of beauty!!! I'm about to spoon on a new set of sticky rubber for this trip!
Bad-Tat 05-24-2010, 06:28 PM Don't need a room. That is my normal lunch run to Deals!!!
mudarra 05-24-2010, 07:52 PM Just got back from a trip, and yes, I will split a room if a bed is still available.
I also have some ideas on the route, I will do some googling tomorrow.

mudarra 05-25-2010, 08:36 AM My thoughts exactly! :thumb:
sharrison56 05-25-2010, 08:46 AM Aren't there some routes that get you off of 64 going up? Also, remember that 129 is still closed on the TN end of the Dragon.
mudarra 05-25-2010, 08:54 AM Here's my suggestion.
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&doflg=ptm&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=108488752555696536529.0004876b6ce7cf8c86c62&ll=35.167073,-84.364014&spn=0.994632,1.763306&z=9
This avoids 68, which has become the detour for 129 and as such, is seeing a lot more commercial traffic.
It uses Ga 60 which is one of my favorite roads.
64 out of Ducktown follows the Ocoee river. Its nice and scenic, sometimes a little slow if there is a lot of rafting traffic, but not too bad for that short a distance.
30 through Reliance rocks! Real twisty, and opens up a little the closer you get to Tellico Plains.
mudarra 05-25-2010, 08:57 AM BTW 64 is open now.

sharrison56 05-25-2010, 09:45 AM What about this? http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/?org=aj#/x630m86b7fmsc81h It is a full day, but it covers some nice roads if traffic isn't too bad.
mudarra 05-25-2010, 09:59 AM 441 through the park usually sucks with slow traffic in the summer.
That would be my main concern.
Vendetta 05-25-2010, 10:31 AM I added Wayah Rd to the loop. Its pretty twisty. Just another option if you are interested.

I have done this route before and enjoyed it, but isn't 64 closed along the river somewhere?
antman325 05-25-2010, 11:08 AM I just did Wayah Rd this past Sunday for the first time. Its twisty and a little rough in some places but a nice scenic road. A guy up there said Deals is re-open now so traffic is flowing normally I would guess. Whatever you guys decide on a twisty route is cool with me.
Vendetta 05-25-2010, 11:29 AM OK, Wayah Rd. it is. Here is the map with all the updates.

sharrison56 05-25-2010, 12:07 PM 64 is open again, but 129 isn't. http://www.tdot.state.tn.us/rockslideinfo.htm
You ride the Dragon from Deal's Gap to the Overlook, but it is closed down by the lake. Originally TN had closed it at the state line.
mudarra 05-25-2010, 12:24 PM 64 is open. I rode the Ocoee section of it Friday on my way to middle TN.
129 is still closed just south of the foothills parkway. TN DOT estimates July before it will be re-opened.
Vendetta 05-25-2010, 01:02 PM Mudarra, can you post an updated map with this info?
mudarra 05-25-2010, 01:29 PM Your last map is still fine. We just can't ride 129 north of the dragon overlook.
Are we doing the whole loop saturday? Or part of it on sunday?
sharrison56 05-25-2010, 02:05 PM Your last map is still fine. We just can't ride 129 north of the dragon overlook.
Are we doing the whole loop saturday? Or part of it on sunday?
That is what I was wondering. Leaving Saturday morning we will have time to ride a lot more than just to Tellico Plains.
mudarra 05-25-2010, 02:14 PM Yep, we could hit Cherohala, the dragon, and 28.
Vendetta 05-25-2010, 04:07 PM My only concern is that with the current route, it will take 7 hours of riding time to get to Tellico as per Google. I've never ridden in that area, :o so I will follow what more experienced riders have to say about it...
mudarra 05-25-2010, 04:42 PM Going from Cumming up 60 to 64 through Reliant and then into Tellico will take maybe 4 hours. Which would leave ample time for a Cherohala run and back.
But yeah, the whole loop would be quite a ride for one day.
So I was thinking that whole loop would be a two day fair. Part of Sat, and the other part sunday?
But I'm ok with what you guys want to do.
We could get to Tellico and then play it by ear for that matter. Its all good riding!
skindoners 05-25-2010, 11:53 PM I will make this ride. Anyone else coming from Florida or S GA. If so we can meet up on Fri and head up.
NEVER MIND THIS IS FATHERS DAY WEEKEND. I WILL HAVE TO PASS.
If anyone plans on going on the 26th post it I can go that weekend. We may have a smaller group.
antman325 05-26-2010, 12:08 AM Going from Cumming up 60 to 64 through Reliant and then into Tellico will take maybe 4 hours. Which would leave ample time for a Cherohala run and back.

Yeah I vote for doing a skyway run or two, or three :D, once we get up there and do the rest on Sunday. This would be non stop riding until late to do all this in a day! Plus that's what we have the rooms for boys!
antman325 05-26-2010, 12:44 AM Or we could make the loop a little bigger to the east and head over on 64 past Highlands and take part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. I dont know how to do the map thingy but just follow 64 east past Highlands. There is some really twisty stuff around there.

That's perfect man! As long as you all are good with it. And figure with breakfast, lunch, gas and photo stops, this should be a very full day of super fun riding. If you're checking out this thread and are trying to decide whether to ride or not, you better come on. This one is going to be a classic! And make sure you tires are good.

oldkawboy 05-27-2010, 01:53 PM Hey Guys,
Sorry for the delay, been out of town.
I see the get together is planned for the week-end of the 19th, being Fathers Day on Sunday I'm kinda out now. I only live 45 minutes from the cabins so I can ride over early and catch you folks for a day of riding or I might ride some Friday and spend the night and be there Saturday when ya'll roll in.
What's on the agenda as far as meeting up? Where and when?
I do wanna meet you guys and ride some, just spending Saturday night is not gonna work.
Thanks,
Dan

Maybe we can meet up at 28 in SC and hwy 19/74. Thats by all the white water rafting stuff in Nantahala National Forest. Not too far from you. We should be there by mid afternoon on Saturday the 19th.
Castiell59 05-28-2010, 12:50 PM That sounds like fun, wish I could go I guess I'll have to wait until next time. I was in Iraq for last fathers day so I should probably stay home. Ya'll have fun.

You and your dad could ride do a Fathers day ride with us. What better way to honor dad! :usa:
Castiell59 05-29-2010, 01:40 PM True, however my Dad lives in California, it's my 5 year old son that wants to spend the day with me. Since I'm just getting back into riding after a 14 year break I don't want to ride with a passenger until I get a little more comfortable at riding. I'll have to wait until he gets alittle older for that anyways.
antman325 05-31-2010, 10:46 PM Absolutely! Well have a great fathers day and glad you could be here for your son this year.

sharrison56 06-02-2010, 12:45 PM I assume that the plan is to follow your route to Tellico Plains on Saturday. Once we get there, just do whatever we feel like doing and then finish the loop Sunday morning.
They sell beer at the store down the street. The restaurant at the lodge will let you bring your own beer. If you want anything stronger than beer, bring it with you.

Missing something?
Hows about any of us that wanna meet up Sunday Morning and ride part of this loop? I can't commit more than a day, and from the looks of it getting to the Sat morning ride leaving asheville NC too early...but Sunday looks good, early out, meet up at the lodge for breakfast and join part of Sundays ride.
I sure enjoyed last years ride, would like to share curves with my fellow VRS riders.
Vendetta 06-09-2010, 02:43 PM Cool!!!
antman325 06-09-2010, 11:36 PM Excellente! BTW folks, I will have to head back early on Sunday since my 14 yr old daughter now wants to take me to six flags for fathers day.
lgajohnymac 06-10-2010, 09:21 AM I'm out too, guess I was wishful thinking, but VACA at the OBX starts that day. My family would kill me after I delayed the vacation from the other side of the state! I wil however be riding down the VRS. I absolutely love riding the OBX even if they are straight and narrow roads. The best part is not waiting in line at the ferry on ocrocoke at 7pm going back.
antman325 06-11-2010, 11:29 AM Bummer dude. Have fun with your ride.
ACE39 06-12-2010, 09:09 PM Hey local mates, I may be able to join for part of the ride. I gotta get to the outlaws in Chattanooga Saturday. A little side trip may be in order... Will advise.
oldkawboy 06-14-2010, 08:40 AM Remember.........the only difference between in-laws & out-laws is that out-laws are wanted!
Just got in from working Americade last night, is everything still a go?
Dan
Vendetta 06-14-2010, 01:05 PM GO!
mudarra 06-15-2010, 02:04 PM Looks like I am not going to make it.
:(
I sent my suspension to traxxion a couple of weeks ago with the hopes they could get it done in time, but it doesn't look like it will be done till the end of the week at the earliest.
sharrison56 06-15-2010, 03:45 PM That sucks! I guess we will have to have another ride.
antman325 06-15-2010, 09:18 PM Spooning on some new rubber tomorrow and making the switch to full synthetic too...I'm a go! :thumb:
sharrison56 06-15-2010, 10:06 PM I am a good too, but like you I will need to head off to Father's Day activities Sunday morning.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe we can have another ride in July.:D
Anyone interested in the bed that Mudarra was going to use in the hotel? There is room for one person. Who's calling dibs?
Vendetta 06-16-2010, 08:10 AM Spooning on some new rubber tomorrow and making the switch to full synthetic too...I'm a go! :thumb:
Remember to give that new rubber a good 50-70 mile scrub before testing the chicken strips...
mudarra 06-16-2010, 09:19 AM Yep, we definitely need to do more rides!
Maybe once a month? :thumb:
New tires:
The secret is to never lean completely on the non-scrubbed part. You don't necessarily need a long scrub ride.
Just lean a little on one corner, then a tad bit more the next corner, so you are on mostly scrubbed tire, and a little bit of the non-scrubbed.
Doing this on roads in the deals gap area will have you golden in just a few miles.
I once picked up a new rear at Wheelers (on the Robbinsville end of the Cherohala), and rode straight across it, gradually leaning a little more each turn.
No slippage, no problems.

Do you think we could just use one room since there is only 3 of us? There is a fold out sofa bed, a full bed, and the floor. Just a suggestion to save some $$ if you get no takers.
antman325 06-16-2010, 08:56 PM Yep, we definitely need to do more rides!
Maybe once a month? :thumb:
I could do this...maybe every 3rd Saturday. And of course we wont be doing a big ride with an overnite like this one. Just some local stuff. Speaking of local stuff, does anybody know if 348 is reopened yet?
oldkawboy 06-17-2010, 09:16 AM Another change for me..........
We've had my Dad's house on the market since he passed away a year & a half ago and it finally sold, of all days it has to close tomorrow and I gotta be in Chattanooga for the signing, just found out this morning 'cause the VA's been dragging their feet for the guy.
I've had everything ready for the overnight trip and was looking for some quality time alone for a good ride Friday then meeting up with you guys Saturday morning in Buford.
According to Mapquest it's 166 miles thru the mountains from here to Buford so as of now I'm planning on leaving out at 5:30am on Saturday and try to meet you at Atlanta Bread Co. by 9:15.
As long as it's dry I can make good time :-), I got a new set of Pilot Roads that love the twisties!!
Can one or two of you guys PM me your cell numbers in case I have to meet you in Dahlonega or somewhere else......providing there is cell coverage. I'll send my number back by PM.
Thanks folks,
Dan

I'm OK with having just one room for the three of us. We can keep my room since it has 2 beds, cancel yours and for $10 more we can get a roll-away bed added to my room.
Yes I called the hotel and asked and they are OK with this... :D
Vendetta 06-17-2010, 11:49 AM It looks like the private messages are not working. I'm trying to get the riders contact info but for some reason messages are not going out.
oldkawboy 06-17-2010, 11:51 PM Adrian,
I received your cell number by PM, did you get mine?
Dan
antman325 06-18-2010, 06:14 AM I got them too. I suggest one last minute change on where we meet. Instead of having Oldkaw have to ride all the way down to Buford, I say we all meet in Dahlonega at http://www.ridershill.com/ . They have coffee and some type of food there and I think this would be a better launching point for our ride. We can still say 9:30 and gas is right next door.

Ok I'm doing it.
sharrison56 06-18-2010, 07:37 AM So where are we meeting and when? I am going up 400 (or the back way) so Cumming or Dahlonega work fine for me.

We start and end at Riders Hill. Same time as before...
Vendetta 06-18-2010, 08:33 AM Ok I'm doing it.
Cool!!!
sharrison56 06-18-2010, 03:22 PM So 9:15 at Rider's Hill?
Vendetta 06-18-2010, 04:54 PM So 9:15 at Rider's Hill?
This is what I have from earlier in the thread;
When: Meet up: Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 8:30am with tanks full
Ride Start: Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 9:15am
antman325 06-18-2010, 07:36 PM Riders Hill is Closer to Oldkaw. I say we meet at riders hill btwn 9-9:15. If not then oldkaw is coming way down to meet us when we are going up anyways. Cmon fellas its not that big a deal.
sharrison56 06-18-2010, 08:21 PM I think that is the plan, but I think Vendetta wants to meet at 8:30 and leave Rider's Hill at 9:15. I am fine with either, but I just checked and Rider's Hill opens at 9:00. I think he usually opens the gates earlier that that so you can get into the parking.
Bad-Tat 06-18-2010, 08:35 PM Boy! Good thing I checked this thing at last minute!!
sharrison56 06-18-2010, 08:55 PM Are you going to join us?
Bad-Tat 06-18-2010, 09:05 PM Yep, Not staying overnight tho.
sharrison56 06-20-2010, 01:11 PM Ok, we survived with no injuries! We had Vendetta, antman325, Bad-Tat, oldkawboy and me. The riding was awesome. Other than Highlands, NC traffic was very light yesterday and today. The Tellico Lodge is an awesome place to stay. The rooms are nice and they let us cancel a room and get a rollaway bed so that we had a room for three. The restaurantis good and you can bring your own beer. The breakfast buffett is $5 and awesome.
I will post some pics later today.
oldkawboy 06-20-2010, 02:05 PM Glad you guys made it back safe & sound, hope Bill did too since he was riding in the dark thru the mountains.
Great guys & great riding! Glad we got together, it was like Dunkin Donuts.....worth the trip.
Good to meet you folks, let's do it again.
I just got in from a 100 mile dual-sport ride with my sons, what a way to spend Fathers Day. :-)
Dan
mudarra 06-20-2010, 06:52 PM Glad to hear yall had a great time! I hate I missed it.
sharrison56 06-20-2010, 07:10 PM You missed some great riding! Traffic wasn't bad, great group and a great pace!!!
Bad-Tat 06-20-2010, 09:31 PM Had a great time with you guys! Made it back ok and the high beam stayed lit.
We need to do another soon!
rumbo75 06-20-2010, 09:33 PM I wish I could go out there to meet you guys...but it's a little far for me to ride at this point.
But you're all welcome to come out to texas.
antman325 06-20-2010, 11:12 PM Yeah it was a great ride with some very cool guys. No rain, no cops, no crashes, lots of twisties. Awesome to meet everyone and I really enjoyed the experience. The Lodge at Tellico was very nice too.
Vendetta 06-23-2010, 12:34 PM Pictures. I think Sharrison56 has some more...
