: Mesh vented pants
WindWalker 05-04-2010, 09:20 PM Any suggestions for some highly vented mesh pants with side zips to get on without removing the boots? I want something I can slip on over my shorts and then easily and quickly remove when I get to where I'm going.
I have found the Joe Rocket Phoenix 2.0, but have read that they aren't that well vented.
I checked all my local shops and that netted nothing, all happy to order stuff. I like to see stuff and check it out before I buy. But it looks like this is gonna have to be a blind internet purchase.
Thanks for any insite.
Mike
rumbo75 05-04-2010, 09:27 PM I'm having the same problem. Seems that most pants do not have full length zippers which is disappointing.
I'm also trying to keep it under 100 bucks. I don't want any liners or anything...just well ventilated pants with full zippers.
DaveC 05-04-2010, 09:30 PM I have the Olympia Air Glide pants (http://www.olympiamotosports.com/mensairglidepant/menairglidepant.htm), and they work fine.
I'm still a bit nervous about riding with just shorts on underneath them, though...even though they seem pretty sturdy and are solid in the places where you are most likely to make contact, they still have quite a bit of mesh area, and I suspect I'd have a bad case of rash (in a mesh pattern) on parts of my legs if I went down. That's probably true for any mesh pant, and is part of the trade-off of using mesh.
I chose the black suit with pewter. If I had my time back, I'd have bought the pewter or silver. Black still gets warm while sitting in traffic.

blipco 05-04-2010, 09:54 PM That's what I'm looking for. Wear pants or shorts underneath, when I get to my destination, whip 'em off and voila! Worst case scenario I have to remove my boots but I can't even find anything like it. I've even thought of hockey pants. Good protection but way to bulky. The olympia pants look ok but I'd have to try them on.
ScottyNeal 05-04-2010, 09:55 PM If you're interested in really good pants, look at Motoport. They have kevlar mesh pants that pass air thru nicely, are armored, and have full length zippers allowing you to put them on over your boots.
Pricy, but very high quality.
blipco 05-04-2010, 10:08 PM I just went to the Olympia site again. The Transformer pants can turn into shorts. Hmmm.

These are pretty nice; easy on/off, comfortable and cool (unless sitting still in the sun) and with the waterproof liner in they’re warm enough down to 50 or so. The hip armor isn’t terrible but it does leave a bit to be desired.

I have Icon ARC Mesh overpants and got them from Bike Bandit. I've worn them at 85 with khakis and felt fine. The do not have zippers and have a perforated nylon lining under the mesh and knee armor. I like them and they are true to size (buy your normal size and they fit over pants, or buy one size down for wearing over shorts.
Randy49 05-04-2010, 10:35 PM I ordered these for hotter days, have a vent zipper on the front of each leg and an open one on the back of each leg. I orderd one size larger to slip over shorts, the back of the leg velcros with enough room for either my boots or riding shoes. $59.95
kevrider 05-04-2010, 11:21 PM i have fieldsheer mesh pants (and jacket) (http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/sport/mesh+motorcycle+jackets/fieldsheer_high+temp+mesh+jacket+-+size+sm,+2xl,+4xl+or+5xl?utm_source=gps&utm_medium=csn&utm_term=High+Temp+Mesh+Jacket+-+Size+SM%2C+2XL%2C+4XL+or+5XL&utm_campaign=sport-mesh+motorcycle+jackets). knee and hip armor, full length zip, on/off over boots and jeans.... i wouldn't rave about the protection (you know, because they're mesh) but they are definitely easy and breezy.

What brand are they?¿

Firstgear HT Air Overpants
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/40/147/ITEM/Firstgear-HT-Air-Overpants.aspxI have these. They do breath very well, but I agree: the armor is pretty thin in both the hips and knees.
For the OP: they won't slip over boots though. The zippers go all along the sides (there's even a video on that link that demos them), they have pockets and, as mentioned, a liner.
They're also >$100.
dakotav899 05-05-2010, 07:26 AM +1 Randy I have the X-elements also...at 59.00 from leatherup.com
Hardware 05-05-2010, 08:19 AM I have these. ... they won't slip over boots though.
Mine sure do..., in fact it couldn't be easier as both the pants and the liner zip open all the way up to my hip. Even standing up it's almost like stepping thru a belt.
objectuser 05-05-2010, 08:22 AM Well, shoot, maybe I need to read the manual!
Lours_Polaire 05-05-2010, 09:00 AM I wear the Phoenix
Don't think that you can get more air than them ...
Haven't tied other "summer" pants, but the Phoenix are made of tick, open mesh, and air goes true very easily
They have a bit of tightly wooven denier around the waist, and it might be what some have complain about, but really, can't think of another way to get/make well ventilated protection pants
Ciao

mchieffallo 05-05-2010, 10:55 AM +1 on LOURS -- I just recently got the Joe Rockets. IMO plenty of airflow. Zippers all the way up the leg.
Aleeoop 05-05-2010, 11:00 AM Hey Windwalker,
You mentioned that you want to be able to take off the mesh pants without removing your boots. Does that mean you're going to wear boots with your shorts? I'm trying to picture that. I hope they're cowboy boots so they look cool. Sorry, couldn't resist.

:thumb: on Motoport. Yes, I do ride with shorts underneath: bike shorts so that I don't chafe on the rough Kelvar inner surface. :o It vents really well, even with their latest gen 4 pads.
In the summer rain, everything will get wet. But then they dry off rapidly with the venting. In fact, when riding in the AM in the mountains in summer, it's best to wear some light pants anyway due to it being a bit nippy and shrinkage would occur...:D

that's the thing that surprised me the first time i stepped out in the mesh. before i got on the bike, just standing there talking to my cousin, i noted the breeze blowing right thru me. midsummer, but i got a chill. i was impressed.
then again, i wear my e-vest when it's 69F.

No Cowboy bots here, the horse died a few years back.:( I work construction, and yep I were boots and shorts all he time. Maybe it depends on where you live, but it's a pretty common site around here.

I followed the link to FieldSheer Titanium Air-3 Pants with Insulated Liner
- no mention of the full lenght zipper?
Just want to confirm, cause I'm liking hat price.

Aleeoop 05-05-2010, 07:41 PM Just havin' some fun with you. I'm not actually a "fashionisto" myself. Thanks for the reply........and good answer.
By the way, I wear First gear Air Mesh over pants and put aftermarket knee/shin armor in them. I believe they cool the best. When you hold them up to the light you can see light through them. Maybe not the most protective but great when it's really hot. I also have a pair of Alpinestars A-10 Air (mesh) pants (inside the boot type). They are cut just like their track leathers and have excellent armor that doesn't move around. With all that armor they probably can't cool quite as well though but they are confidence inspiring while helping to beat the heat........Alec

i don't know about the ti-air, i have the 4-season. you can see the zipper in the pic:
http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/dir/image.php?id=23775
that velcro at the bottom is annoying, but it serves the purpose.
jaxxsun 05-05-2010, 08:32 PM I have been wearing AlpineStars mesh pants for five years now.
The leg zippers start at your ankel and go toward your inner thigh area. And you can wear these with street clothes underneth.
I step right into or out of these pants with SIDI vertigo's on :)
There is armor in the knees and your butt area has a good layer of cordura for slide protection.
And let me tell you they move air. I have felt hotter wearing just jeans.
Oh one last thing, they are not big and saggy. They are close fitting but not tight or restrictive
Randy49 05-05-2010, 08:36 PM I rode with my Xelement's today for the first time, alot cooler pant to wear than my non vented, opened the zippers half way and the cool air made the ride very pleasent!can't beat 59.95$
drumdaddy 05-05-2010, 10:41 PM Give these a look from Scorpion.
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/1/1/40/13682/ITEM/Scorpion-Deuce-Overpants.aspx
I tried these on at a local dealership and really liked them. as I recall, they have a wind and water proof removable lining and the whole side will open up. it's vented and has armor.
How well do they hold up if you hit the pavement? Check this out- http://www.scorpionusa.com/news/media/20080827.html

Looks like these have a velcro leg cuff, any side zips? Can you get them on and off without removing your boots?
Thanks, Mike
Randy49 05-09-2010, 09:45 PM They velcro in the back and I can get them off over my boots. I have inexpensive Vega boots, they are smaller than most I think. Slide right off over my riding shoes though. The price made it right for me. Already have spent alot on my other pants and three jackets. One is mesh/w armour red/BLACK Kawasaki jacket with a cheap windproof liner that I'd like to sell.
twowheels 05-10-2010, 04:47 PM If I was in the market for pants right now I would probably get the Olympia X-moto. They use 500 denier Cordura and 2000 denier Dupont Cordura on the seat, hips and knees so they have a lot more abrasion resistance than most textile gear. 1000D Cordura is supposed to have similar abrasion resistance to leather. They also have a breathable liner which is a lot better than the rubberized coating cheaper gear uses and that makes you feel clammy from the trapped moisture.

WindWalker 05-10-2010, 07:25 PM Thanks for all the feedback guys. After thinking on it more I decided not to get full mesh pants.
I leave for work pretty early, get to watch the sun come up over the mountain, so it's usually pretty cool, even in the summer. And when I come it's usually starting to cool off some too. So I decided on a textile pant with vents. Joe Rocket Alter Ego. Went a bit over budget, but made a guy an offer on e-bay that I never thought he would take, but he did.
Thanks again, Mike
twowheels 05-11-2010, 11:36 PM Found this crash test of Joe Rocket Alter Egos. It does not look like they offer much abrasion resistance. Unfortunately with textile gear you need to spend $200+ to get pants that offer enough protection for higher speeds. Cheaper gear uses polyester/nylon as opposed to Cordura or Polyidimyde and does not bother to reinforce the strike points like seat and hips.

kevrider 05-12-2010, 01:19 AM 1000D Cordura is supposed to have similar abrasion resistance to leather.
i'll have to google up a source for that sometime, but it makes me feel better about my kit. this wasn't a factor when i made my purchase, but i'm even happier with my choice. it didn't even cost $200 per piece, more like per set.

I have the Tourmaster Venture Air pants. They are well vented and hall armour in all the right places. They have two removal layers, a water proof and thermal so can be used all year round (assuming no ice). I hit the tarmac at 90kph (56mph) in a pair with only my shorts underneath and I will vouch for them.
Pricey but worth it, check them out on http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/catalog/Venture-Air-Pant-p-227_4.html
Cheers

Cheers davew, after a set of pants like that, checked out web site and to land them in NZ would cost me abot $330.00 so will check out local bike shops and see if they stock the tourmaster pants and will be interesting to see if it can be sent from states cheaper than local shop.

+1 on the Joe Rocket Phoenix.
camaroz1985 05-12-2010, 10:43 AM I have the Tourmaster Flex pants. They have zip off textile covers for the mesh areas, a waterproof liner, and thermal liner. One pair of pants good for all year long.
Kind of pricey, but you only have to buy one pair of pants instead of one for summer, and one for the rest of the year.
