Seems the spammers have been really bad here of late,my imagination or not?

Whole site is plagued daily.
But why this forum I don't understand...

Holy spammers batman! I mainly check the fourm on my phone and just got all excited when I saw how many new posts there were, sadly it was 95 percent spammers....uggg. Not cool. Are spam postes generated by actual people or is it some sort of program that is doing this?

For the most part, bots are used to troll the web looking for vulnerable sites that can be hacked or infiltrated. When they find an opening, the site will usually be flooded for a few days until the 'leak' can be addressed. Often, the bot's IP can be banned and sometimes that takes care of the problem for a while. Then again, they will sometimes be bounced from so many computers that it's really hard to keep up. Sometimes it's the regular members of the forum that are at fault - not keeping their anti-virus protection up to date makes it possible for the hackers to use their computers to send out legions of bots without the computer owner even being aware of what's going on. Hackers also access passwords to forums from infected computers and then use the passwords to infiltrate the forum. We've battled them for years on my backpacking forum and no matter what you do, there will always be a new method of attack in the pipeline.
It's rarely ever an individual going after a forum or website - unless of course, there is a significant amount of money or information to be gained by the action. Bots can do the work much more efficiently, hitting tens of thousands of sites in a few minutes.
The moderators of this site do an excellent job of keeping the scum swept out. We can help by using good passwords - at least 8 characters with a mix of numbers and letters - and by helping the guys watch for the spammers so that they can be eliminated ASAP.
