: are jackets from leatherup and jackets4bikes any good?
beavis 11-21-2009, 01:23 PM I am in the market for some riding leather pants/jacket and the price from leatherup (specifically their own Xelement brand) and jackets4bikes seems way below the rest of the riding leather market.
Now I'm not one to turn my nose up at a good deal and name brand means nothing to me but quality and servicability mean a lot. Are the leathers at those places of questionable quality and workmanship or do they have a good thing going for a good price there?
If anyone has purchased anything from those places (specifically Xelement) I would appreciate any feedback.
THANKS!

Leather up stuff is really cheap but also crap as far as abrasion protection (their textile gear) and quality goes. They also got an F from the better business bureau.

I've dealt with newenough.com and revzilla.com with good results.
Value is a subjective thing but of all the gear I've owned I've been most happy with my Olympia and Rev'It stuff which was not the cheapest. If cost is a major concern have a look at the closeouts on ironpony.com, newenough.com, etc. as I think you'll be happier in the long run with better quality brand name gear.
MHansen105 11-21-2009, 07:31 PM Beavis,
I bought an Xelement leather jacket from Leatherup.com just about a year ago.
The jacket has been good, and I can attest to the protective qualities as well.
My model is the heavier Buffalo leather with armor, and saved my skin when I fell over at about 10 mph last April.
One bad thing has happened, the first time I used the venting zippers on the front of the jacket, the right one fell apart in my hands.
But as you've noticed, the price is hard to beat. My interaction with the company was excellent, the product was shipped promptly and was exactly as advertised.
As always, your milage may vary!

cetzel 11-21-2009, 10:26 PM I have the classic biker jacket from leatherup.com two years ago and still have it. It's very nice.
Shatrat 11-22-2009, 11:30 AM I bought my girlfriend an xelement jacket from leatherup.com earlier this year and one of the seams in the front near the vent is coming apart.
I wear a textile Kawasaki branded jacket and the quality of it seems better, although both of the pocket zippers have failed.
sharrison56 11-23-2009, 08:58 AM I bought some leather pants for a friend from LeatherUp.com and the zipper failed the 2nd time she tried them on....unfortunately it was about 90 days after I bought them.
Machog 11-23-2009, 09:37 AM I got some leather gloves from jackets4bikes. One of the best pieces of kit I've ever got. Great fit, high quality leather and all for about $20.00 no shipping no tax. So if their other gear is as good, no worries.

LoneRanger 11-23-2009, 10:20 AM I have a leather-up leather cruiser jacket that is 3.5 years old. It was $99 shipped. It has elbow, shoulder and lower back padding. A zipper snapped off the sleeve but the leather is holing up great. no complaints.
amir_zwara 11-23-2009, 05:41 PM I'ce heard good things about leatherup.com...
but then again, cheapest isn't bestest!
alekkas 07-13-2010, 09:26 PM Bought my wife a riding jacket from Leather Up a few months ago. Between her and the kids it has been worn probably 20 times. No issues. Don't know about the liner and cold weather yet. Truly does keep the rain off.
I just ordered myself a jacket.
Cheap - I am sure there is MUCH better gear out there - but so far, so good for affordable, rainproof, breathable jackets with some padding.
stagehand38 07-13-2010, 10:11 PM can't speak on "Leatherup.com but..
My sweetie went to TheRidingGear.com. got the one you see me wearing for christmas....perfect fit. really well made.
came with armor and cold weather zip out liner.
All for $135 dollars US.
Service was thoughtful.....My gal ordered me one size and gave them my body specs too....they sent a letter with the jacket saying they sent a smaller size because the jacket ordered ran large ( if memory service).
Anyway, they were dead RIGHT...Nailed it....Perfect fit!

kenr74 07-13-2010, 11:49 PM I have some Xelement boots and they have been good so far. I have a pair of their textile pants on the way. No issues with customer service so far but they don't seem to ship as fast as some other places.
I bought a pair of Leatherup's short engineer boots. Heavy, no ankle protection, and had to add holes to the straps to tighten them up as they were loose. After using them for a couple of months, I bought a pair of Icon Super Duty 2s. Haven't worn the others since. I'd say the boots were good for stomping around, but marginal as riding gear. My conclusion: spend a bit more and search for deals.
KawiVA76 07-14-2010, 08:10 AM I had a pair of the Xelement riding jeans up until just last week. I bought them for about $30 last summer. Rode with them through the end of last season and into this one. The knee pad never sat correctly inside while riding, moved around a lot. The armor itself is basically worthless. After a year the pocket that the armor sits in on the right leg came apart, as did a few of the belt loops and the right rear pocket. If you really need bargain basement gear then go for it, but you get what you pay for.
I would say try to save a little more and search for some deals on quality gear. I've been riding for five years buying $50 jackets, etc. here and there. This last Friday I went out and bought the Rev'It Sand jacket and pants with their Zenith H20 glove and Sidi On-Road boots. The difference is amazing, as it should be for gear that expensive. But I have absolutely no regrets, so comfortable and I rode through a monsoon yesterday just because I could, lol.

REDDOT55 07-14-2010, 08:34 AM I can recommend the Men's Armored Black and Grey Tri-Tex? Fabric With Leather Trim Jacket and Level-3 Advanced Armor. No complaints, wears well, protected me. Also can HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Tourmaster Caliber pants, sure they're hot in the summer but better than the alternative. I ordered the Tourmaster as they were available in tall sizes and am very glad I did.

That's the jacket I just ordered. Just back in stock. My wife's is similar, but without the gray. This price is the only way i could afford to get into this type of padded, rainproof gear. Just hope it continues to hold together.
dakotav899 07-14-2010, 03:23 PM I have the tri-tex textile, jacket and pants with armor from leatherup.com ...great fit and a good price, no complaints here.
I also had a good experience with leatherup. Bought my first jacket there. Can't really say how good it would be in a crash but the quality fit and finish were fine for the price. Also bought my helmet from them using one of their many coupons that you can always find online.
alekkas 08-02-2010, 11:06 AM FYI ...
Just finished a Saddle Sore / Bun Burner Ride wearing the Xelement Black/Gray Jacket. Took out the liner. Opened all the vent holes and wore it for the entire trip.
Day one was low 80's with no humidity. All good riding and at stops. Day two got into the 90's and more humid. All good riding, but I did notice I was taking it off at stops on day two.
Really pleased with the feel and performance on this ride. In these temps, it did great and I was comfortable the whole time.
Randy49 08-02-2010, 06:26 PM I also have the xelement vented pants and jacket. Fit good with no problems at all. I also have Texport pants and jacket for coool to colder weather.
Heres pics of the xelements
alex.jackson96 10-15-2010, 06:46 PM i am crazy about motorcycle riding. I have bought a jacket some time ago from LEATHERBRANDS.com and that is fantastic deal i ever have had but some days ago i bought a xelement jacket from leatherup.com and believe me guys this is the worst deal i ever have. so please avoid from these guys may be some peoples got some good stuff luckily but i this is my personal experience.
I have Xelements jacket from leatherup.com and ride in it for two years when it's getting colder. Leather quality is very good. Stiching is nearly perfect. However, I had to remove armor that came with is because it was very cheap and uncomfortable. Shoulder protection from one of the Joe Rocket jackets nicely fits in shoulder packets but i could not find pads that will provide elbow protection because sleeves are quite narrow, protection packets are small and no CE rated armor is so thin.
twowheels 11-15-2010, 08:37 AM Not saying we all need to be wearing Dainese leathers but IMO you get what you pay for, at least to a point. For instance in a sub ~$200 leather jacket there are not any expansion panels in the shoulders or elbows for easy movement. Cheaper and thinner leather is used, cheaper and weaker stitching methods, cheaper armor, and there is no thicker leather used on the strike points.
